Isaiah Thomas to Celtics: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reaction

Timothy RappFeb 19, 2015

Isaiah Thomas joined the Phoenix Suns this summer in a sign-and-trade with the Sacramento Kings. Just a little over half a season later, he's been shipped out to Boston.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports first reported the agreement:

Of course, the trade doesn't come as a huge surprise. In fact, it had been rumored for several days, per CSNNE.com's A. Sherrod Blakeley, and comes on the heels of Goran Dragic's move to Miami and a deal for Milwaukee's Brandon Knight, via Wojnarowski.

ESPN.com's Marc Stein noted Wednesday that sources informed colleague Ramona Shelburne that the Suns were trying to move the University of Washington product:

"

But sources told ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne that the Suns, after fielding the Lakers' pitch for Dragic late last week, countered by offering Thomas to L.A. ‎ESPN.com reported over the weekend that the Suns were trying to deal Thomas in hopes of reducing their backcourt logjam and appeasing Dragic, but sources say the Lakers quickly rebuffed the Thomas proposal, determined to maintain as much salary-cap flexibility as possible to chase the likes of Dragic, Marc Gasol and Rajon Rondo in free agency this summer.

"

ESPN's Chris Forsberg noted that this move was one Celtics general manager Danny Ainge had wanted since last offseason:

It's also no surprise that the Suns were able to find a suitor for Thomas, who was one of the team's leaders in points and assists per game. At just 26 years of age, Thomas has plenty of excellent years in front of him.

The one thing that Thomas has always been able to do is score. He spent three seasons with the Sacramento Kings and came into his own in his third year, averaging 20.3 points and 6.3 assists in 34.7 minutes per game. The Suns clearly coveted the spark that Thomas would provide their already solid backcourt and brought him aboard this season.

Boston is adding an exciting, flashy point guard who can score with regularity to the squad.

In this case, it would seem that Phoenix's loss out of necessity is Boston's gain.
