Dear World Wide Leader In Sports: Thanks For Nothing

Lisa HorneJan 1, 2009

Dear World Wide Leader in Sports-

On behalf of all USC fans, we appreciate all the glowing accolades you bestowed on the USC Trojans after their win in the Rose Bowl. We really do. We love your broadcasts, and endless football fodder.

We heard your "what ifs" on if USC faced an Oklahoma or a Florida. We heard your statements of how USC has just as legitimate of a claim to be in the National Championship Game as the Sooners or the Gators. How there needs to be a playoff. Blah, blah, blah.

So where the heck have you been all year?

Ripping the Big Ten and Pac-10 for their perceived conference strength like there's no freaking tomorrow.

How embarrassing is this?

The World Wide Leader in Sports publicly dissed two conferences and in the process, swayed voters to pick an SEC and Big 12 team.

Nothing against those two teams, they certainly are worthy of playing for that crystal ball, but by wielding your almighty power on college football, by broadcasting most of the games and ramming your "expert analysis" down our throats, several teams that should have been at least considered "worthy contenders" were never given the chance. Thanks to you.

Both Oklahoma and Florida are certainly worthy of playing for the title. But so are a lot of other teams. By posting your analysts' rankings on air (and one of them votes in the polls), you are wielding influence over other voters who may not have watched all the games. The fact that you (except for Mark May, of course) downplayed one team's worthiness for the title game and then questioned why they weren't playing in the title game after a Rose Bowl win is comical, at best. Hypocrisy reigns.

You love your power, and now it has been abused. The Big 12 looks mighty tough this year, but the SEC is "down" just like the supposed Pac-10 and Big Ten are "down." According to YOU.

You have given a conference the benefit of the doubt for no other reason than just because they are your favorite. The bias is obvious.

The best part was watching two of your analysts go on and on about how good USC is. That's nice, and we enjoy watching them. But you should remember to gauge a team's worthiness on the team's performance, not the conference's, the entire year. Not after the fact.

If the best darn team is in a poor-performing conference, that doesn't mean the best team is any less worthy than a team in a strong-performing conference. The best team is the best team, regardless of its conference.

We all know how to gauge which teams are worthy. Utah is a darn good team. They beat Michigan just as badly as some other BCS conference teams. Northwestern scored less points on the Wolverines than the Utes, did they not?

You have continually fueled the importance of conference play when it has no bearing on how good a team is.

What's this conference trophy you are giving out? So what if the Pac-10 is 5-0? All that means is that five teams in one conference went undefeated. That's it. Nothing more.

It doesn't mean it's the best conference. You are doing a disservice to the football community by continually ramming conference strength down everyone's throats. We are NOT conference fans. We are football fans. We root for our teams.

Now, please do all of us a favor and finally shut up about which conference is the best. Your constant babbling worked- several teams were left out in the cold because of your expert analysis, and now you have the nerve to ask why USC isn't in the big dance. Consider us officially befuddled.

Please, oh, please, stop the madness.  If USC beats Washington 69-0, isn't that just as impressive as Georgia beating Georgia Southern by 21 points? Do you get it yet?

Signed,

Fans of USC, Texas, Texas Tech, Alabama and Utah.

PS- the best of luck to Oklahoma and Florida in the National Championship Game. Let it be free of injuries, bad calls/no calls and controversy. (And the World Wide Leader questioning if the BCS got it right- the BCS is just following your lead, fellas).
