Jaguars vs. Titans: What We Learned from Jacksonville's Loss to Tennessee
For those who thought the first quarter of the Jaguars game against the Titans was a message of things to come, please count my in as one of the many.
The Jaguars, trying to find something good to write home about during the holiday season, couldn't get out of their own way while trailing 10-0. But following a touchdown run by Maurice Jones-Drew, there was some ray of light or false hope, or something maybe related to Santa Claus that gave us all a little holiday cheer.
Then Scrooge rained on any momentum the Jaguars may have gained in the second half en route to a 23-17 loss at the hands of Tennessee.
The loss gave the Jaguars a 4-11 record on the season heading in to the season's final contest next week, against the streaking Indianapolis Colts.
Here is what was learned from the loss this week.
8. The Secondary Was Porous
1 of 8Playing with reserves and street free agents is not the way you want to play against a pass-first offense.
The Jaguars made Matt Hasselbeck look like he did in 2006, when the Seahawks went to the Super Bowl.
The middle seam appeared to work all day for the veteran, who threw for 350 yards on the day.
7. The Run Defense Held Up Well
2 of 8Chris Johnson was held to 56 yards on 15 carries.
Jamie Harper had six yards and a score.
Whatever the reason and no matter who is in the game, the Jaguars still have played solid run defense throughout the season.
6. Maurice Jones-Drew Gets Another 100 Yards
3 of 8It only took 24 carries for MJD to amass 103 yards. He did not have huge gains in the run game this week, playing on an ankle that needed to be taped in the first half of the game.
Jones-Drew now has 1,437 yards on the season and still leads the NFL heading into the final game of the season.
5. Jarrett Dillard Had a Decent Game
4 of 8Despite a couple of drops that should have been snared, Jarrett Dillard has a chance to be a pretty decent second receiver on this team.
Dillard had five catches for 61 yards.
It seems like he and Blaine Gabbert have pretty decent chemistry.
4. Blaine Gabbert Flashed Signs of Success Again
5 of 8It seems at some point in every contest, Gabbert teases us with his arm and poise.
At one point, the rookie was 13 of 21 passing. He finished with 21 of 42 attempts for 198 yards and an interception.
There were three passes that should have been caught by receivers on sideline passes, and one pass that could not have been caught because he could not find MJD because of taller defensive linemen.
3. Jeremy Mincey Continues to Have a Great Year
6 of 8While the signed free agents have played well on this team, Jeremy Mincey continues to shine.
Today, the defensive end has an interception of a Matt Hasselbeck pass.
Mincey leads the team in sacks and appears to be all over the field for the defense each game.
2. Scobee Gets a Field Goal, Finally
7 of 8After not kicking one in the last three games, Josh Scobee comes through with a 39-yarder.
Scobee has only missed two kicks all season.
He had five points in the contest.
1. The Colts Are Rolling
8 of 8Now that they have beaten Houston, the Colts are riding that wave of momentum.
Hello, Jacksonville.
And remember this is not a team run through Peyton Manning.
Dan Orlovsky led the Colts to a last minute win over the Texans Thursday night and have 11 days to prepare for the Jaguars.
While they may lose the first pick in the NFL Draft because of their recent success, it shows all teams in the NFL have a little life in them.
