Ohio State Football: Can Urban Meyer Make Braxton Miller as Good as Tim Tebow?

Tim BielikDec 22, 2011

With only a few days until Ohio State plays Florida in the Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl, that means it's only a matter of time before Urban Meyer gets his hands on freshman phenom Braxton Miller.

Miller and Meyer seem like a great match of QB and coach.

When he came to OSU as a freshman one year ago, Miller seemed like the next great OSU dual-threat; a hybrid of sorts between Terrelle Pryor and Troy Smith.

He showed in one season that he has the ability to run wild against college football defenses.

Miller's passing needs some touching-up, but most of that blame lies with the lack of an experienced QB coach.

Enter one of the best coaches in the modern era of college football with the goal of putting some good coaching around Braxton Miller, and the sky could be the limit.

Meyer's spread offense seems like a perfect fit for Miller's skills, namely his ability to run with the football and extend passing plays if need be.

While OSU will need to develop some playmakers at the wideout position to help Miller out, the framework of the offense presents Miller with unique opportunities.

And it's quite possible the offense could be just as dynamic as the Gators offense when Tim Tebow was the quarterback from 2007-09.

Miller's pure speed and elusiveness in the open field is quite a difference from Tebow's power-running style.

That speed can open up the perimeter of the offense on scramble, option or bootleg plays that the Meyer spread offense predicates itself on: using the whole field to your advantage.

Can Miller be better than Tebow? Odds are no.

Can he at least be as good as him? There's no reason to think that it's not a possibility.

The OSU-Michigan game a month ago gave Buckeyes fans a glimpse of what the young man is capable of in terms of playmaking, and he has made plenty of clutch plays in his short career.

He has had some growing pains during his freshman season under coaching which is far better than it was a year ago.

We won't get to actually see much of his progress under Meyer's tutelage until the end of April when OSU has its annual spring scrimmage.

Between upcoming spring practices and a recruiting class that is skyrocketing up the rankings, the optimism around the Buckeyes is so high that even a postseason ban couldn't dampen too many spirits.

And the biggest reason of all is that with the potential to finally have an offense that lives up to the types of players OSU can recruit to make Braxton Miller a superstar, things couldn't be much more intriguing.

But really, anything but Tresselball is welcome for Buckeyes fans.
