January Transfer Window: 1 Player Each EPL Side Would Sell If Fans Ran the Team

Mikhail TurnerDec 23, 2011

If fans in the EPL had their way, there would be one player on their team certain to depart as soon as possible.

For some teams it is more than one player but for the sake of this article we will focus on just one. Though I cannot say that I know everything about these teams, it is possible to suggest a player who could be sure to leave the club soon.

Here is a list of one player each EPL side would sell if fans ran the team.

Blackburn Rovers: Michel Salgado

1 of 20

Michel Salgado looks likely to be leaving the club in any case and Blackburn fans would continue that process.

The Lancashire club seems to be in some financial trouble at the moment and getting rid of Salgado—who is probably on of the highest earners at the club—would go a long way to helping the team.

Bolton: Gary Cahill

2 of 20

Why? For the sake of the club it is probably time that Gary Cahill leaves. The transfer rumours in the summer probably put him off his game and he has not been able to put out the same level of performances that got him attention in the first place.

Cahill may not demand the same transfer he did during the summer—seeing as he is a few months closer to the end of his contract—but he will get the club some money nonetheless.

Bolton fans may not want to see the back of one of their better players because of his performances, but rather for financial gain.

Wigan Athletic: Chris Kirkland

3 of 20

Chris Kirkland is no longer first-choice at Wigan but he is a decent keeper who could get the team the finances to help with their current situation. Kirkland has had injury problems and his contract is almost at an end.

It may be time to cash in.

Wolverhampton: Sylvan Ebanks-Blake

4 of 20

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake has been with Wolves for a while now but he has not made much of an impact at the Premier League level.

Selling Ebanks-Blake would rid the fans of a frustrating player who could then be replaced by someone more capable. Blake is just one of the players who could be in this position for Wolves but he may get a decent enough price to make him worth selling.

Queens Park Rangers: Adel Taarabt

5 of 20

Adel Taarabt was very vocal about moving away from the London club in the summer. His performances so far this season have showed as much as Taarabt has not scored a goal yet in this campaign.

QPR could cash in on the Morroccan and use that cash to enhance other positions in the squad. Taraabt has been a diva so far this year and it may be time for him to go.

Sunderland: Asamoah Gyan

6 of 20

Asamoah Gyan was a great find for the club as their record signing last season so his loan move this summer was surprising.

Gyan claims money wasn't the reason for his leaving but money could be the reason he leaves Sunderland for good. At the moment, Sunderland has paid £13 million for a one-year player so the organization and the fans would want to recoup some money.

Gyan has made no promise that he will return to Sunderland to stay and fans surely will be annoyed by this.

Swansea City: Craig Beattie

7 of 20

When you send your club-record signing off on loan in the same season that you enter the Premier League that is not a good sign.

Beattie moved to Swansea two years ago and already seems to have a foot out the door. Swansea has been doing okay in the league so far so it seems the team is not missing him.

Fans surely would want to regain some of the money spent on this striker and use it on someone else who can help the team.

Fulham: Bobby Zamora

8 of 20

Bobby Zamora apparently is being frozen out of the club

Andrew Johnson's contract situation could pose a problem as Fulham would not want to risk him leaving for free next summer, but he has been performing quite well this year.

Zamora could provide the team with a nice fee that would they would be able to use to buy a capable replacement.

Aston Villa: Jean Makoun

9 of 20

Jean Makoun was a surprise buy for Aston Villa last year and he already seems to be on his way out of the club.

Makoun is currently on loan at Olympiacos, but if an offer for a final transfer is made Villa fans surely would be ready to accept. Villa's squad could use some strengthening and the funds from a Makoun sale would go a long way to helping that.

Everton: Victor Anichebe

10 of 20

Victor Anichebe has been at Everton for his whole career so far but it doesn't seem like there is much progress.

Anichebe could be sold to give some much-needed funds to the Merseyside club.

West Bromwich Albion: Marc-Antoine Fortune

11 of 20

Marc-Antoine Fortune may have been recalled recently to help the team throughout an injury crisis but he could be on his way out in January.

The very fact that Fortune went out on loan in the first place means there was not much need to have him in the squad. It may just be time for him to move on.

Norwich City: Aaron Wilbraham

12 of 20

Aaron Wilbraham will go down the pecking order when James Vaughan returns from injury. He could leave the club and help the team get some revenue.

Stoke City: Ricardo Fuller

13 of 20

Stoke City obviously went the tall route when signing Peter Crouch, and they have Kenwyne Jones as well.

Ricardo Fuller has been with the club for some time now, but with injuries and age slowing him he could leave the club soon.

As is the case with any transfer, fans would want a player to leave to make space for a new arrival.

Newcastle: Xisco

14 of 20

Xisco was not able to make much of an impression at Newcastle and won't find much time in the squad when he returns from loan.

Demba Ba has been knocking in the goals and Leon Best has added a few of his own, so Newcastle won't need another forward in the squad.

Liverpool: Alberto Aquilani

15 of 20

Alberto Aquilani has proven a wasteful signing for Liverpool.

Two of the three years that he has been a Liverpool player he has spent time on loan back in his native Italy. During that time he has done a decent job for both Juventus and Milan.

Aquilani was obviously no replacement for Xabi Alonso, and Liverpool fans would be trying to get rid of him as soon as possible.

Arsenal: Sebastien Squillaci

16 of 20

Sebastien Squillaci has been a horror show during his time at Arsenal, and the Gunners could do with getting rid of the Frenchman.

Squillaci has been the subject of a rumoured move to Spain—Arsenal fans surely would want to speed that along.

Chelsea: Yossi Benayoun

17 of 20

Yossi Benayoun was certainly not a fan favorite after Arsenal beat Chelsea earlier this season.

The Israeli international did not contribute much during his time with Chelsea but his match-winner against Aston Villa has definitely raised his status a little among Arsenal fans.

Benayoun would be one of the first names on the transfer list for Chelsea fans.

Tottenham: Giovani Dos Santos

18 of 20

Giovani Dos Santos is a forgotten figure at Tottenham. He is one player that Tottenham fans surely would sell if they were in charge.

Dos Santos came to Tottenham with some hype after his time at Barcelona, but none of that has been fulfilled. He definitely needs be sold.

Manchester United: Dimitar Berbatov

19 of 20

Dimitar Berbatov may not be a disliked figure at Old Trafford, but at the moment he is not needed.

Berbatov has not seen much time this season with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck all ahead of him.

Manchester United fans could be thinking that a Berbatov sale would raise funds to sign a good midfield prospect in the winter, or it could just help shore up the Red Devils' finances for the future.

Manchester City: Emmanuel Adebayor

20 of 20

Emmanuel Adebayor is doing well right now on loan to Tottenham and did well during his loan spell at Real Madrid.

Manchester City fans must be wondering how other clubs have been able to get Adebayor to perform when he hasn't done well for them.

Adebayor's sale would go a long way to helping the club into a better standing when Financial Fair Play begins.
