Giants vs. Jets: Big Blue WRs Justifiably Confident Against Darrelle Revis

Wes ODonnellDec 22, 2011

Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz and Mario Manningham are boarding a Jet on Christmas Eve day. They'll be flown to Revis Island, a mythical place where—according to legend—wide receivers go to disappear.

The man who runs this island, Darrelle Revis, is better known as the best cornerback in the NFL.

Well, arguably.

The cornerback has a knack for running routes better than his opposition, he's physical at the line of scrimmage and essentially causes quarterbacks to completely ignore their top receiver.

Hakeem Nicks isn't afraid of disappearing, though. When asked if he thought Revis was the best cornerback in football, he responded by saying, "He's a decent corner. He's decent," according to Newsday.

This week, he may or may not lock up with Revis for the duration of the game. It is still not clear whether the Jets are going to lock down sides or lock down men, but they will be matched up at some point during the game

On that note, Nicks wasn't the only Giant to get in on the act, either. Giants breakout star Victor Cruz added:

"

Teams aren't really scared anymore. He's got to earn his money this year. Teams aren't really backing down. I feel like we're going to do the same thing. We're going to go out until he physically stops us and we're going to spread the ball around.

"

Mario Manningham even chimed in, saying teams are "too scared" to throw his way; that Revis and Antonio Cromartie's success has more to do with scheme than anything else and that the Giants won't be like that.

This is a heck of a lot of talk from a group of players who don't talk very much.

Revis took the high road on the situation.

The Newark Star Ledger's Conor Orr quoted the Jets superstar as saying:

"

It don't matter what I say, it doesn't matter what other receivers say, if it's on paper, it's on paper. You have to go out there and play on Sundays and you have to prove it. You just gotta prove it.

We'll see on Saturday at 1 p.m.

"

He did, however, take a slight jab at Victor Cruz by saying the only time he'd heard of him was during the preseason.

Last year Cruz had his coming out party against in the Jets in the teams' annual preseason game, but wound up injured early in the year and was put on the IR.

This year has been a different story, and whether Revis is being funny or truthful about not knowing Cruz, he's certainly seen film on him this week.

The Giants receivers—Cruz and Nicks especially—have the numbers to back up their talk. Both players are over 1,000 yards on the season and are among the league leaders in both receptions and yards.

That being said, a lot of that has to do with the footballs that Eli Manning is throwing.

Indeed, when it comes to challenging Revis, the job will fall on him.

It has been done this year, though. We saw Ryan Fitzpatrick and Stevie Johnson attack Revis and the duo bested him for a touchdown and several completions (before the WR turned back into that other Stevie and started dropping balls).

Quarterbacks have gone after Revis and he jokingly added, "I mean I'm not a monster so why would anybody be scared? I don't know."

The Giants have reason to not be scared. In fact, it is good to see the team showing some fire after they sleepwalked through their game against Washington last week.

Beating Revis won't be easy. He's not some chump who just threw on a uniform this week. However, he isn't the unbeatable Revis he used to be, either.

Look for the Giants to go after him early and often. It will be one heck of a battle, but don't be surprised if the Giants have success.
