UFC 141: Why Diaz Vs. Cerrone Will Be More Exciting Than Lesnar Vs Overeem

Jake MartinDec 21, 2011

Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem might be getting more publicity, but Nate Diaz vs. Donald Cerrone will steal the show.

When Diaz and Cerrone take the center of the cage on Dec. 30, fight fans can expect a war of attrition. Both guys always come into a fight in great shape and always bring it. After all of the great fights that have taken place this year, this fight has the makings to top them all.

Both fighters possess flashy fighting styles and are coming off impressive performances inside the Octagon. Diaz destroyed Takanori Gomi with his boxing in his last fight, and Cerrone blasted Dennis Siver with some brilliant kickboxing.

In both performances, Cerrone and Diaz dominated the stand-up, and used their Jiu-Jitsu once it hit the ground to finish the fights in the first round.

Add in the fact that these two are motivated and fired up to fight one another, and you’ve got yourself a barn-burner in the making.

These are the reasons why Diaz and Cerrone will be a fight that fans’ won’t soon forget.

Styles Make Fights

1 of 3

The phrase “styles make fights” is overused in MMA, but if you were ever to use it, this is the perfect case.

The truth of the matter is that great stylistic match ups more than often make for great fights. Diaz and Cerrone are well-rounded fighters that have very few weaknesses. In fact, if I had to pick a weakness for both fighters it would be their wrestling.

Diaz and Cerrone have great striking abilities and are just as dangerous on the ground, so wherever this fight takes place, it will be exciting.

Watching them battle it out on the ground would be fun to watch, but what I’m looking forward to seeing the most is these two standing and trading strikes. I want to see how Diaz’s improved boxing skills match up against Cerrone’s lethal Muay Thai strikes.

And it’s not like this fight is going to end in the first round with a knockout, which is more than likely going to happen in the main event.

Both of these fighters have great chins and love to get in scraps. Their track record proves it.

Look at the wars Cerrone has been in with Jamie Varner, Ed Ratcliff and Rob McCullough, and don’t forget about Diaz weathering the storm early against a heavy-handed Marcus Davis.

This one is a lock for fight of the night.

A Diaz is Fighting...

If you’re a fight fan, you have to love the Diaz brothers.

I understand that a lot of MMA fans don’t like the Diaz brothers for their brash attitudes and demeanor inside and outside of the Octagon, but you have to respect what they do in there.

When’s the last time you saw a boring Nick Diaz fight? You’d have to go back years ago to when a wrestler laid on top of him for the entire fight, and the same can be said about Nate.

Unfortunately for Nate, he’s had those fights more recently. His fight against Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 125 was underwhelming, and you never expect that when a Diaz fights.

Considering the fact that Diaz isn’t fighting a wrestler, and is fighting a guy who likes to stand and bang, has me giddy.

Like many of you, I’m not a fan of all the trash talking, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love to watch them fight.

Whether it’s Nick or Nate, the Diaz brothers always come to fight, and I expect nothing less in Nate’s fight against the Cowboy.

Heads Have Already Clashed

As much as I love the honor, respect and discipline aspects of MMA, I’ll admit that it’s just a little more fun when the fighters have some beef.

Donald Cerrone recently said in an interview that he went to shake Diaz’s hand and say, "What’s up?" Diaz slapped his hand away and called him a “punkass.”

As you can assume, Cerrone didn’t take too kindly to Diaz’s response and has used it for motivation during his training.

Personally, I can’t wait to see Diaz in the ring taunting Cerrone, and Cerrone’s emotions coming to fruition. That’s what Cerrone has to be weary of in this fight, and I’m interested in seeing how he deals with Diaz’s antics.

This is just another reason to get excited about this great matchup. Kudos to UFC matchmaker Joe Silva for putting this beauty together.
