Stephen Curry Injury: The Golden State Warriors Must Sign Gilbert Arenas
With Stephen Curry out for possibly quite some time, the Golden State Warriors will need to replace one of their main scoring threats as soon as possible. A player that they Warriors should sign is recently-released free agent point guard Gilbert Arenas.
On Tuesday night, Curry re-injured his ankle that he has had much trouble with over his career. While it is just a sprain, who knows how long the injury will linger for. The ankle was surgically repaired just months ago in May, so it will remain to be seen how the ankle will hold up now.
Curry was good for nearly 19 PPG last season, and many would have assumed that this year he would have put up even better numbers. Considering that the Warriors don't have much depth behind Curry, they will need to address his absence with a player like Arenas who can potentially match the amount of points that Curry attributed.
Arenas started out his career with the Warriors after being drafted in the second round. He spent two years there, and in his second year, he really started to become the player he ended up being for years to come.
Arenas averaged 18.3 points per game while starting in all 82. And while Arena's hasn't played in an entire season since that year, he could come in and fill the void while Curry recovers.
It is no secret that Arenas has not been the same player since he injured his knee back in the 2007-08 season with the Washington Wizards. Over his career, Arenas has been good for 21.2 PPG, and he presents a nice size standing at 6'4.
Last season, Arenas was traded to the Orlando Magic. In 49 games, Arenas managed to score eight points per game while averaging about 21.2 minutes. With players like Monta Ellis and David Lee filling out the Warriors' lineup, Arenas would be a solid, cheap veteran option to add to the team for the time being.
The good thing about Arenas is that he would not be brought in to be the Warriors' answer, but rather just an addition to assist the team in a time of dire need.
Arenas certainly comes with his risks, but considering he would likely come at a low price, he would be a risk worth taking.
Considering their lack of depth behind Curry, Arenas could continue to provide a nice insurance piece in case Curry's injuries flare up again.
The Warriors did select Klay Thompson out of Washington State with the 11th overall pick, but he is quite a big option at 6'7". He could play along Ellis, but he is much better suited to be playing the two-guard position.
The Warriors have some time to make a decision, but if they see Arenas as a viable option, they better claim him soon. There haven't been any suitors for his services as of now, but many teams could become interested once the season gets under way.
