NBA Trade Rumors: Desperate Magic Fans Won't Be Enough To Keep D12 in Town
I have to give fans of the Orlando Magic credit, they are doing everything they can to try to persuade superstar center Dwight Howard to stay with their team.
Unfortunately, I just don't see that happening.
It's rather obvious that Howard wants to leave the Magic, and short of somehow bringing in LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan in his prime, I don't see them being able to put a NBA championship contending team together.
He want's to play with superstars, because that's what the NBA is turning into.
If you want to win the title, you have to have great players around you. We've seen that the one-superstar approach just does not work in this league.
Howard wants to win, and he wants to get paid very nicely to do so. He's going to be a free agent next season, which means he could just walk away from the Magic. The Magic don't want to let him go without getting any value in return though, so trading him away is the best option.
Well, that or re-signing him, but the latter seems almost impossible at this point.
All signs points to a trade, and that's why it's so cute that Magic fans think they can somehow guilt him into staying.
The Associated Press via the Washington Post is reporting that Howard got quite the reception from the fans he is wanting to leave:
"In his first on-court appearance in front of fans since making a trade request, Howard was greeted to a loud ovation from about 9,000 fans when he was introduced during a free, open scrimmage the team held at Amway Center on Saturday.
The All-Star center has spent each of his seven NBA seasons in Orlando, but asked management to be traded shortly after the Magic opened training camp.
Howard’s No. 12 jersey was worn by fans throughout the crowd Saturday, many of whom held professionally printed signs from StayDwight.com that read “Superman This Is Your Metropolis.” Other homemade signs were also on display, nearly all including three words: Dwight, please and stay.
"
You're right Magic fans, Howard is going to see the outpouring of love and support from you and realize that he's completely okay trying to fight for an NBA championship along side Jameer Nelson, Hedo Turkoglu and J.J. Redick.
The Magic even tried to make a big splash by trading for former Celtics forward Glen Davis, as if "Big Baby" is going to be a selling point for the team.
I understand what you're doing and frankly it's your duty to do so as a fan of your team. That being said, it's not going to work.
Howard wants out, and he's going to get what he wants.
He's made it abundantly clear, and there's no amount of signs or cheers that will change his mind.
Perhaps it's time to invest in a new sign, Magic fans:
"See You Later, Superman."
