NBA Rumors: Miami Heat Would Boost Backcourt Depth with Gilbert Arenas
If the Miami Heat know what's good for them, the team should give veteran guard Gilbert Arenas a chance.
According to ESPN.com's Marc Stein, Gilbert Arenas has made it clear that the Miami Heat are one of four teams the former All-Star is interested in playing for this season.
The other teams include the L.A. Lakers, New York Knicks and whichever team trades for Dwight Howard."
The Miami Heat were within games of becoming NBA champions in their first year of being assembled, as the Big Three in South Beach are expected to have continued success going forward.
Yet, what separated and still separates this Heat team from an NBA championship is a weak backcourt. With the exception of Dwyane Wade, the team lacks a significant amount of depth in the guard rotation.
When Mike Miller and Mario Chalmers are the two other threats at the point guard and shooting guard positions, you have a team that will experience problems.
Chalmers is currently the starting point guard for the team this season and averaged just over 22 minutes per game last season.
In those minutes, Chalmers put up an average of just 6.4 points and 2.5 assists per contest, numbers that have to improve if the Heat expect to become NBA champions.
Bringing one of the league's veteran scorers into the guard rotation will be the one spark that could get the fire ignited in Miami.
The Heat are as strong of a contender as any team in the league, and if they were to acquire Gilbert Arenas, they would become easy title favorites.
