Tim Tebow: Tim Terrific's Performance Will Dictate His Legitimacy

Justin WeltonDec 18, 2011

Could you imagine the hoopla if Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos defeated Tom Brady and the New England Patriots on Sunday? It would be insane.

What if Tebow outplayed Brady throughout four quarters? It seems unrealistic, but we may see it if he can come through on Sunday. Tebow’s performance on Sunday, poor or great, will dictate his legitimacy going forward.

The sports universe is great at overreacting to micro-subjects when they should be focusing at the macro level. When a team starts 3-0 in a NFL season, people love to suggest that they are Super Bowl contenders.

When teams lose a few games in a row then people want to blow the process up. Look at the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA, for example. They went to back-to-back-to-back NBA Finals, winning two, yet some fans wanted a change just because how they lost to the Dallas Mavericks last postseason.

Really?

Just imagine if Tebow plays great for four quarters in a Broncos victory.

And you thought this past week on sports stations across the country had too much Tebow, just you wait. You haven’t seen anything yet if Tebow gets it done this week. Even the biggest naysayers will be caught “Tebowing” in front of cameras.

It seems like the haters are waiting for him to fail just so they can say, “See! I told you so; he isn’t a quarterback in this league.” If Tebow struggles against the Patriots and the great defensive mind of Bill Belichick, I’m sure we will hear people say that the Patriots have set the blueprint in defeating Tebow.

I wouldn’t agree that a “blueprint” is out on Tebow because it was just one game, but I’m sure we would hear it.

People can’t put their finger on if Tebow is legit or not. The haters can’t knock his play in the final quarter and even the biggest fans have no excuse for what he doesn’t do in the first three quarters.

Tebow should have a solid day throwing the football against the worst passing defense in the NFL. The Patriots are allowing 309 yards per contest—definitely something that an average quarterback could exploit.

He should have some type of success in that area.

Few would suggest that the Broncos are a better team than the Patriots unless you are a fan of Denver. But if Tebow and his team defeat Brady and his team, the same team that won five games in a row, then more people would consider Tebow legit.

“Tebowmania” could be ready to run wild all over the world if the Broncos defeat the Patriots.
