Norv Turner and 3 NFL Coaches on the Hot Seat

Mike WalkuskyDec 17, 2011

With Tony Sparano, Todd Haley and Jack Del Rio already out of jobs, it's time to look ahead at other head coaches who are on the chopping block.

One coach who has perpetually been touted as the next coach to be fired is Norv Turner.

Turner has led the Chargers to yet another disappointing season. The Chargers' six-game losing streak earlier this season is one of the biggest letdowns in Chargers' history.

Even if the Chargers make the playoffs—an unlikely prospect—Turner still has to be fired.

The Chargers have underachieved for far too long. Although the Chargers' window of opportunity to win a Super Bowl may have closed, they still need a new head coach to motivate them.

Turner is not the only head coach that faces a pink slip in the near future. Here are three other coaches that are on the hot seat.

Jim Caldwell, Indianapolis Colts

1 of 3

When Jim Caldwell was anointed the head coach-in-waiting in January of 2009 in Indianapolis, many people figured he would have to wait a long time for Tony Dungy to retire.

However, Dungy retired one year later, and Caldwell was installed as the head coach for the Colts.

Caldwell excelled in his first season with the Colts. He won his first 14 games as head coach and led the Colts to a loss in Super Bowl XLIV.

The Colts reached the playoffs in Caldwell's second season, but lost to the New York Jets in the first round of the playoffs.

Caldwell's world has fallen apart in his third season. Through 13 games, the Colts have yet to record a victory.

It is clear that the Colts' success in Caldwell's first two seasons can be attributed to Peyton Manning and not the head coach.

Caldwell looks listless and clueless on the sideline when the cameras catch him. His poor coaching aptitude should lead to him being jobless shortly after the season ends.

Andy Reid, Philadelphia Eagles

2 of 3

Andy Reid is a very good coach. However, it seems that the Philadelphia Eagles no longer listen to him, and that means that it is time for new blood in the City of Brotherly Love.

Out of the coaches on this list, Reid is the only one that will be a legitimate candidate to fill another team's vacant head coaching position.

Reid will not be penalized for wearing out his welcome in Philadelphia; it is inevitable that every fanbase will get fed up with their team's head coach at some point.

Reid should not be criticized for losing the hearts and minds of his players and fans. Instead, he should be lauded for maintaining his job in the tough city of Philadelphia since 1999.

One thing that the Eagles should have learned from the Washington Redskins—a divisional rival owned by the nonsensical and extremely rich Daniel Snyder—is that compiling All-Star teams often leads to disappointment rather than championships.

There's no question that Reid will be a hot commodity on the coaching market if he is indeed let go by the Eagles.

Steve Spagnuolo, St. Louis Rams

3 of 3

In Steve Spagnuolo's third season with the St. Louis Rams, an endless amount of injuries have plagued the team.

Following a 7-9 record last year, the Rams looked like an up-and-coming team.

However, the injuries suffered by the Rams have the team limping to a poor 2-11 record thus far.

In 45 games with the Rams, Spagnuolo has a 10-35 overall record.

The expectations after last season, combined with Spagnuolo's poor overall record and the Rams' poor performance this year will likely lead to Spagnuolo being axed.

What is unfortunate for Spagnuolo is that most of it is not his fault. The Rams are a team with very little talent, and the majority of their talented players have been hurt at one point or another this season.

If Spagnuolo is let go by the Rams, then he will likely be able to latch on with another team as their defensive coordinator. Spagnuolo is an excellent defensive coach.

In the future, Spagnuolo should be given another chance to lead a team as a head coach. If he is ever given the opportunity to be a head coach, hopefully he will have a team with much more talent than the Rams.
