Julian Edelman's Focus Turns to Football as Sexual Assault Charges Are Dropped

Eric BowmanDec 15, 2011

The legal troubles are over for New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman. Prosecutors have dropped charges against him because they couldn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt.

Martin Finucane of the Boston Globe reports that Edelman's case is being terminated, meaning he no longer is being charged with indecent assault and battery.

Edelman was accused of groping a female at a nightclub back in November, and while he stayed with the Patriots, his focus was more than likely being distracted because of a court battle.

According to a statement released by Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office, there wasn't enough evidence.

"

"After a thorough investigation of this case by the Boston Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit … the Commonwealth has concluded that it would not be able to meet its burden at trial of proving each of the elements of indecent assault and battery beyond a reasonable doubt."

"

A woman claimed Edelman touched her in inappropriate places, which led to very strict charges against the Patriots receiver.

"The evidence suggests that he approached a woman on the dance floor and took her hand briefly. Review of the videotape indicates that the physical contact between the two was fleeting ... and did not meet the elements of any crime,” prosecutors said in a statement.

It's an unfortunate event no matter how you look at it, but the court has made its decision and everyone involved must move on.

The Patriots are preparing to battle the Denver Broncos this Sunday, and even though Edelman is just a role player, he still needs to be fully focused on the game.

With the legal issues gone, Edelman must now get back to football and do his best to help the Patriots win.
