Breaking News: Free Agent Jamal Crawford Set to Sign 2-Year Deal with Portland
Finally, Blazers fans can take a sigh of relief.
After Brandon Roy's declare of retirement, the Portland Trail Blazers have just about come to terms with 2009-2010 Sixth Man of the Year, Jamal Crawford, for a two-year, $10 million contract.
Crawford, 31, averaged 14.2 points per game—his lowest in eight years—in a season where many believed he was being ousted out of Atlanta. Without B-Roy, he''ll bring valuable firepower off the bench.
Portland beat out the New York Knicks, who were offering $5 million over two years and the Sacramento Kings who were offering $6.5 million per season along with a stacked backcourt (He would have played alongside Tyreke Evans, Jimmer Fredette and Marcus Thornton).
The first signs of Crawford coming out to Portland was earlier during the NBA Lockout, where he and Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge tweeted each other about the possibility of joining forces.
In late October, Aldridge tweeted:
"Rip City when @JCrossover come play in my game we need to make him feel at home so he will sign with us!
"
Crawford responded shortly after:
"@aldridge_12 ---yall have GREAT fans too!! And love u and broy's game!!!
"
Though Brandon Roy is no longer in a Portland Trail Blazers jersey, Crawford is surely psyched out to be playing alongside his good friend, L.A.
With Crawford in the rotation, the Blazers are once again deep at the guard position with Raymond Felton, Wesley Matthews and Nolan Smith all vying for minutes.
According to SI.com, the deal is on the brink of being finalized. Because the Blazers are a luxury tax paying team and have a mid level exception of only $3 million, they can either amnesty Roy before Friday's deadline or "complete the process on a disabled player exception for Roy."
He'll likely play behind Matthews, but coming off the bench as either the point or the two, Crawford's sick handles and knock-down jumper will make Rip City an even bigger contender than they were last year.
We can finally give Paul Allen kudos for something.
What do you think? Is Crawford a good fit in Portland?
