Dwight Howard Trade Rumors: Superman Not a Happy Camper as Magic Kill Trade Talk
The NBA is a magical place where no matter what is going on, somebody is bound to be good and mad.
As Chris Paul gets his wish, leaving the Hornets for the Clippers, Dwight Howard is stuck in Orlando limbo. The team has called off what was slowly turning into a charade as teams continued to daydream of life with the best center in the NBA.
The aftermath is quite simple: Superman is sad.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports runs down what happened as the Magic closed the door on the sale of Dwight Howard.
It seems that on Tuesday, Howard told teammates that a trade sending him to the New Jersey Nets was a "done deal." In the hyper-kinetic NBA landscape we are in, it took just 24 hours for Howard to tell some that, "Ownership killed it.”
So what's left is a big man with a huge hole in his heart as optimism that he would be dealt was squashed. A source told Yahoo! that, "Dwight’s not a happy camper."
I hardly think that Howard is going to go emo like Lamar Odom and demand the only franchise he has ever known trade him, but I do expect this move to have lasting results.
It seems the Magic are gambling that absence makes the heart grow fonder. In a couple months, teams that need a big man will be ready to fork over their franchises to have Howard, or so the hope goes.
CBS Sports' Ken Berger writes the following:
""An executive within the league who is familiar with Orlando's situation said the expectation remains that the Magic will once again revisit trade scenarios for Howard, but not until after All-Star weekend—which is being held in Orlando Feb. 24-26. The trade deadline during this shortened 66-game season will be March 15.
"
It makes sense, sort of. Teams that want Howard now may be in dire straits and really want him at the playoff push. But there is just as great a chance that the opposite happens.
Teams may not want to gut the team of chemistry if the postseason is in sight. There are those teams that would be just content to sit out a couple months more and get Dwight Howard in free agency.
What's more is that the Magic have angered the one person they want to keep happy. Now they will have to really bring in a star player to assuage his trade demands.
This will not end well for the Magic, who are sure to lose Howard whether it be sooner or later.
