Chris Paul and Blake Griffin Will Make Unstoppable Duo
What do you get when you pair one of the best point guards in the NBA with one of the best power forwards in the league?
An explosive combo destined for the playoffs.
On Wednesday, Marc Stein of ESPN reported that the Clippers were set to acquire Chris Paul and two future second-round picks from the New Orleans Hornets for shooting guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and the Minnesota Timberwolves' 2012 first-round pick.
The Clippers, whose first proposal was shot down by the NBA-owned Hornets on Tuesday, rebounded in a big way on Wednesday, setting up what should be one of the league's most explosive teams.
Paired with superstar power forward Blake Griffin, Paul has a pick-and-roll partner for years. It's hard not to imagine what these two could be capable of.
Paul averaged 15.8 points, 9.8 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 2.4 steals last season. Griffin averaged 22.5 points, 12.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists.
It's not out of the question to think the Clippers could suddenly take over the Pacific Division after going 32-50 last season. The Los Angeles Lakers, who also pursued Paul this offseason, have traded reigning Sixth Man of the Year Lamar Odom to the Dallas Mavericks, and forward Pau Gasol looked bad in the playoffs last season.
On top of that, the Clippers don't figure to just be an offensive machine. They also re-signed rising center DeAndre Jordan, who averaged 1.8 blocks last season, and Paul's defense will immediately upgrade the Hornets on the other side of the ball.
The Clippers also have an emerging backup to Paul in the young Eric Bledsoe, who wasn't ultimately included in the deal, and they added former Mavericks small forward Caron Butler last Thursday.
This has all the looks of a postseason team that can actually do some damage once in the playoffs.
Clippers fans have to be drooling thinking about having Paul and Griffin side by side.
