Will Greg Jennings Injury Derail Green Bay Packers Road to Undefeated Season?

Ryan PhillipsDec 12, 2011

In the midst of Green Bay's 46-16 thrashing of the Oakland Raiders, Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings was carted to the locker room with a knee injury. Jennings was heavily favoring his right leg as he limped off the field in the third quarter, and early reports are he has torn his right MCL.

Jennings' teammates are said to be hopeful he will return for the postseason, but in the short-term his absence shouldn't derail Green Bay's chances for an undefeated season. While Jennings does lead the team in receptions with 67, he is part of an offense with ridiculous depth at the receiver position.

Jennings has been quarterback Aaron Rodgers' favorite target this season, but Jordy Nelson is leading the team in yards (957) and receiving touchdowns (10). Meanwhile, Jermichael Finley (42 catches, 600 yards, six touchdowns), Donald Driver (31 catches, 357 yards, four touchdowns) and James Jones (26 catches, 479 yards, five touchdowns) are all more than capable of making up for Jennings' absence in the passing game.

Plus, rookie Randall Cobb (19 catches, 300 yards, one touchdown) is itching to be utilized more often, and running backs James Starks (when he returns from injury) and Ryan Grant are both more than capable of catching the ball out of the backfield.

Rodgers has an incredible wealth of weapons at his disposal, and while losing Jennings hurts, it doesn't even come close to derailing things for the Packers. They are just far too efficient offensively for one player (other than Rodgers) to throw things off by missing some time.

Green Bay is 13-0, and headed for a perfect season and NFL history. While I'm sure they are hopeful Jennings returns soon, the team can and will keep winning without him.
