Why New England Patriots' Fight Proves Tom Brady, Not the Coaches, Is in Charge
Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are the figureheads of the New England Patriots. Together they have won three Super Bowl titles and four AFC Championships. Their success has earned them a lot of power.
Today, we saw a rare scene on the Patriots sideline, a heated argument between Brady and offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien.
The argument came after a Brady interception in the end zone. This explosive argument only ended after O'Brien was pulled away by Belichick. New England is known for playing things close to the vest, so I don't expect to get any further details on the argument.

However, a lot can be taken from this spat. It shows that Brady might actually have more power than the offensive coaching staff. This shouldn't be much of a surprise, as Brady has earned the right to express his opinion.
Bill O'Brien has done a good job coaching the offense, but he has only been a member of the Patriots staff since 2007. His responsibilities have increased after several offensive staff members have accepted positions with other teams.
O'Brien has been Brady's position coach since the 2009 season, and was only elevated to offensive coordinator in February. His experience with the Patriots is important because it shows that Brady has been around much longer.
Brady and O'Brien will make up, but this fight has shown us something we haven't seen from the Patriots. Belichick is all about secrecy and not tipping his hand, but this display has some feeling there might be some locker room issues.
New England will likely have a meeting this week about arguments on the sideline. O'Brien will get an ear-full from Belichick, as a coach should better control his temper.
However, Brady shares a role in this and should be equally scolded. But it is very unlikely that Belichick will place any blame on Brady.
