ECW: Not Extreme Enough...or Not Meant to Be Extreme?
ECW, considered to be a waste of money and time for WWE. If ECW is not extreme then why bring it back? Many people ask this same question. In fact I hear this over and over almost every day. "ECW sucks," they say, "ECW is pointless," they chant, "ECW is dead!" they exclaim. While this article may not be as long as others, I decided to write a few of my thoughts about this topic after a topic was recently made about the ECW Title.
Now, I don't like to name people out during "rants" or accusations, so of course I won't. However, they did say that they will take the criticism about that article, so here you go. Now, while this may not matter to some people due to the fact that I joined here less than 24 hours ago, I do have an opinion, that I think matters. The other B/R writer stated this.
"The ECW Title has turned into something as a sort of excuse to give guys world titles. The title is not extreme as is the rest of the ECW. For some reason ECW is only extreme when people feud with Tommy Dreamer and they don't even do a good job with those Extreme Rules matches."

Now, while I do agree with you on the first part, I really don't agree with you on the second sentence. Now, I know that Vince brought back ECW under Extreme Championship Wrestling, and even though it doesn't go any where near that title, ECW wasn't meant to be "Extreme." I believe that Vince simply brought ECW back, under Extreme Championship Wrestling, as a marketing campaign for the new brand.
Vince is a business man, and as a business man, wouldn't you want your product to succeed? This isn't meant to cherish the older days, this is pretty much a development show that got a tv deal with Sci-Fi.
ECW is meant to be a building block for future wrestlers and to help shape out their careers within the WWE. It's not to go to the " extreme" like the name wants you to think. The ECW title is like the FCW Heavyweight Title. You will never see Shawn Michaels or The Undertaker as the FCW champion, and that is for one reason, it's for upcoming stars.
In another point you made, you stated that Matt Hardy has been in the company for 10 years and never got the WWE or World Heavyweight Title. Why don't people bring this up for someone like Funaki? He's been in the company for years, and never held a World title within the WWE.
Matt Hardy isn't at the point where he is going to retire, he just got a very early start on his career, as did Jeff. While I don't like how they handle the ECW title, by considering it a world title, they make it big deal. Remember when CM Punk won the title from Morrison back in 2007? The crowd was on their feet, they were in a riot of happiness when that moment happened.
It's not a matter of who held it, but a matter of how matches are built. ECW is great in many ways, yet seems flawed in many ways when you see Raw and Smackdown. If you lived in Florida and saw FCW, you'd think that it sucked compared to Raw and Smackdown.
ECW has its ups and downs, and while many people don't like it, I actually do. On the creative side, you see so many people who are up and comers. What I'm trying to say here is that ECW is meant to give people on the lower card a chance to shine. A chance to prove to the WWE that they can move up the ranks. Not every match held on ECW has to be an Extreme Rules match, or every ECW title match has to be held under those rules either.
Like you said, most of them seemed to suck, so why wish for more? WWE tries to avoid heavy injuries like that, injuries that could cause a young man to retire before getting his chance, all because of some people who want the old ECW back. Signing out, I'm Kevin O'Leary...
