Are WWE's Fans Hypocritical When It Comes to John Cena?

Jamie ADec 28, 2008

Let me start off by saying that by no means am I a huge John Cena fan. I think that his in-ring work is entertaining. He could stand to vary it up and get some more technical moves in there, but overall he entertains.

I've been hearing a lot of complaints about Cena as of late, and normally that wouldn't bother me. To every fan their own opinion. But it gets to a point when people become hypocritical.

So I've decided maybe that I'll try to clear a few things up. Here's a few of the complaints I've been hearing:

John Cena changed the WWE title to a "spinner".

Well, let me be the first to say Cena is not the only one to change the belt. Many complain about the belt losing its prestige when it gets changed.

What about the others who have changed it? Superstar Billy Graham, The Ultimate Warrior, and Sgt. Slaughter all implanted colorful straps. Stone Cold made it a Skull belt. Edge turned John Cena's spinner into a "Rated R" spinner.

So really, why is John Cena the only one getting any flak for it?

John Cena has held the title for a full year.

Has anyone forgotten about Bruno Samartino? He held the title 2,803 days. That's about seven years. Hulk Hogan held it for around four years. When you look at their record, Cena's mere "one year" seems almost sad.

He attracts kids and teenage girls.

WWE has been slowly going PG for quite a long time. John Cena is not the reason. If Vince McMahon says to change his gimmick, guess what? John Cena changes his gimmick.

Everyone also seems to forget about Finlay who likes to dance in the ring after matches with Hornswaggle. Does anyone really take him seriously? John Cena may attract teenage girls, but so do Jeff Hardy, Randy Orton, etc.

John Cena never loses.

John Cena did go through a period of time where yes, he never lost. But take a look at his win/loss record for 2008.

He lost cleanly to JBL in a Parking Lot Brawl and to Batista at SummerSlam. He held a tag team championship for a mere one week.

Sure, he wins more than he loses but the same can be said for Batista, Undertaker, and Triple H. Triple H is a whole other story. He's lost maybe three times this year. Once at No Mercy, Wrestlemania, and then recently when he lost the title to Jeff Hardy. Notice though, the circumstances.

1. The pin is never on Triple H. Someone always seems to cheat to win.
2. The pin at Wrestlemania was on John Cena.
3. At No Mercy, Triple H lost because he fought three times that night beating Umaga and Orton only to lose again later to Orton.

But where are the "You Suck" chants when Triple H comes out?

John Cena has a limited moveset [Five Moves of Doom]

John Cena gets a lot of hate for his finisher—The FU.

I know it's basically a modified version of a Fireman's Carry, and really that won't do significant damage, especially when you consider the other wrestlers use the Fireman's Carry all throughout the night and never get a pin.

Others seem to hate the Five Knuckle Shuffle, which yes, again I will admit, it's not the best move and won't significantly damage the opponent.

However, remember the Rock and his move: The People's Elbow? What made that move any more painful? The Rock Bottom was basically a version of a Spinebuster.

Another thing—Nearly every wrestler has a limited moveset, thanks to Vince McMahon. If you look at tapes of their OVW wrestling, or maybe some promotion outside of WWE, they have a wider variety of moves. WWE waters them down frequently.

Those are the complaints, and there are my arguments against them. I will try to be as fair and as unbiased as possible. Feel free to comment this.
