NBA Free Agent Rumors: Tyson Chandler Would Make Outstanding Addition for Knicks

Thad NovakDec 8, 2011

By adding Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony last season, the New York Knicks transformed a team that hadn’t finished above .500 for a decade into a playoff club. In order to take the next step to becoming serious contenders in the Eastern Conference, though, the Knicks will need more personnel changes.

One of the biggest areas of concern is finding a legitimate center, which would allow Stoudemire to return to his natural position at power forward. According to CBS Sports (via Twitter), the Knicks are close to getting their man in the form of Tyson Chandler.

The 7’1” Chandler was an integral piece in DallasNBA title run last spring, using his physicality around the rim and shot-blocking presence to supplement Dirk Nowitzki’s offensive prowess. If he does land in New York, it would be hard to order up a better center to help turn the Knicks into postseason winners.

The biggest hole in last year’s New York roster was a shaky defense that was particularly hurt by the need to keep Stoudemire and Anthony on the floor so much. Chandler would immediately shore up the middle for the Knicks, covering for the defensive shortcomings of their two high-scoring stars.

In addition, Chandler would be well-suited to coexisting with New York’s dynamic duo. Chandler doesn’t need to get touches on offense in order to be effective, meaning that Stoudemire and Anthony can take all the shots they like without alienating him or preventing him from playing to his full potential.

It also wouldn't hurt that the fiery Chandler would be able to provide both championship experience and a brand of vocal leadership that hasn't appeared to be forthcoming from either Stoudemire or Anthony to date.

As CBS notes, the Warriors, who are equally desperate for an inside presence, are also in the running for Chandler, so New York can’t afford to count on landing the ex-Mav until a deal is done.

If he does wind up at Madison Square Garden, though, he’ll be the Knicks’ best shot blocker since Patrick Ewing and a big step toward changing the balance of power in the conference.
