Arsenal News: Andre Santos Injury Guarantees Arsenal Christmas Famine

Gabe ZaldivarDec 7, 2011

If you were to ask Arsene Wenger, he would say that this roller coaster ride is getting him a little nauseous.

From the depths that the summer brought to the highs that the last few weeks have warranted, there is no bigger conundrum in world football than Arsenal

It seems that the ride is going to hit yet another low as the only true full-back on the squad was sent off the pitch with an injury recently.

The Daily Mail reports star defender Andre Santos injured his right ankle in the Champions League loss to Olympiakos, 3-1.

Now a cupboard scant of defensive options goes completely bare. As the report cites, boss Arsene Wenger has been struck by a myriad of injuries recently.

"

Fellow left-back Kieran Gibbs has been out since November with a hernia and may only be fit to return in three weeks. Right-backs Carl Jenkinson and Bacary Sagna are also injured.

"

Wenger issued that Santos will be out "a while." If that vague time period takes all of December, Arsenal are in trouble once again. Forget the surge they are on in the domestic and European front; they will be hurting as the Christmas schedule ramps up.

Somehow, Wenger will have to create a viable back line with six EPL matches scheduled in the next 24 days. It must seem like a sick case of deja vu as the early season issues in defense will surface once again.

I see no way around it—the Gunners will have to make up ground after what is sure to be a very sad Christmas period. This is the time for togetherness and cheer.

Instead, Wenger's boys will be porous in the back and completely sullen after they are left with undesirable results from teams like Everton, Manchester City and Fulham on the docket.

Get your praise ready for Wenger if the boys come out of the winter alive, because there is not much to expect in the way of success in the next couple weeks.

The ups and downs of the season continue and if there is anybody that would like off, it's Arsene Wenger. I guess second would be the fans who have to suffer through what is sure to be bleak times ahead.
