UFC 140 Fight Card: 10 Reasons You Cannot Miss This Event

Jeffrey McKinneyDec 7, 2011

UFC 140 takes place this Saturday, Dec. 10, live from Toronto, Canada.

Headlining the event will be UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, as he hopes to defend his title against former champion Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida.

Also fighting are both Nogueira brothers, former heavyweight champion Frank Mir and UFC legend Tito Ortiz.

If a title match and seeing some of MMA's legends aren't enough to get you excited for the card, keep reading to find out why you shouldn't miss it!

It’s Live from Toronto, Canada

1 of 10

UFC 140 will be the second UFC event in Toronto and eighth overall to be held in Canada.

When the UFC is in Canada, it usually means a great card with many memorable moments.

The last time the UFC was in Toronto, Georges St. Pierre and Jose Aldo defended their UFC titles, Ben Henderson made his UFC debut and Lyoto Machida retired Randy Couture.

Prelims Will Be Featured on Facebook and Ion TV

2 of 10

Usually, the UFC splits up the prelims between Facebook and Spike TV.

This time around, three prelims will be on Facebook, while the other four will be featured on Ion TV.

The Prelims should not be missed, as some of the nights most exciting action can go on in the earlier fights.

Brian Ebersole Is Fighting

3 of 10

Since Brian Ebersole has entered the UFC, he’s 2-0.

When Ebersole fights, there’s usually a memorable moment in his matches.

His fight with Chris Lytle won "fight of the night," and Ebersole left his impression as he attempted one of his trademark cartwheel kicks.

In his second fight, he disposed of Dennis Hallman via TKO and won a bonus for getting Dennis Hallman’s particular choice of cage attire off the screen.

When Ebersole fights, exciting and strange things usually happen.

Mark Hominick vs. Chan-Sung Jung should be an exciting fight

4 of 10

Mark Hominick and “The Korean Zombie” Chan-Sung Jung are two of the toughest fighters in the featherweight division.

Hominick is coming off of a loss with Jose Aldo, and despite looking like he got into a wreck, Hominick kept fighting.

Jung is coming off of his "submission of the year" performance where he submitted Leonard Garcia with the first and only twister in UFC history.

It Could Be Tito Ortiz's Last Fight

5 of 10

Tito Ortiz has had quite the career comeback this year.

After shocking the world by forcing Ryan Bader to tap at UFC 132, Ortiz faced Rashad Evans a month later.

Despite losing the fight, Ortiz earned "fight of the night" honors.

Although Ortiz has said he’s finally healthy again, a loss could put him right back where he was before the Bader fight—in a position to be forced into retirement by Dana White.

Frank Mir Could Put Himself Back into Title Contention

6 of 10

Frank Mir is currently on a two-fight winning streak.

A win over Nogueira would not only give him a third straight win, but possibly put him in the mix for a title shot.

Although Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem will meet at the end of the month to determine the next No. 1 contender, Mir is right behind them with a win.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Could Prove He Really Is Back

7 of 10

After being out over a year while recovering from injuries and surgeries, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira proved he still had something left in the tank.

Despite being an underdog against Brendan Schaub, Nogueira beat him to the punch and earned a KO victory.

Nogueira may have defeated Schaub, but Mir will be a more difficult test.

If Nogueira can pull off the win and avenge his 92 loss, it will prove that he is truly back and possibly has one more title run left.

It Could Be a Big Night for Brazilian MMA

8 of 10

Three of Brazil’s biggest stars will be fighting on this card.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira will be taking on Tito Ortiz in a match where both men are in desperate need of a win.

Nogueira’s twin brother, “Minotauro” Nogueira, will take on Frank Mir.

In the night’s main event, the Nogueiras' fellow Brazilian teammate, Lyoto Machida, will have a chance to regain the light heavyweight title when he takes on Jon Jones.

We Won't See Rashad Evans Interrupt the Winner

9 of 10

Jon Jones has been in two title matches this year.

Not only has Jones won twice, his post-fight interview has been interrupted by Rashad Evans twice.

Evans was the No. 1 contender both times, but has yet to receive his title shot.

Evans is scheduled to meet Phil Davis at UFC on Fox 2, which hopefully means we won't see him step into the Octagon until then.

Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida

10 of 10

Jon Jones has looked unstoppable since entering the UFC.

Although no one has been able to get past Jones, if there’s anyone that can do it, it’s Lyoto Machida.

Like Jones, Machida was once on a path that made him look unstoppable.

Machida is one of the most difficult fighters to train for because of his elusive style.

He’s also one of the most dangerous because of how he attacks and his good defense.

This matchup can either play out like a chess match, with both fighters trying to figure out their opponent's weaknesses, or they could attack early and often.

Either way, this is not a fight to miss.
