LSU vs. Alabama Rematch: How Can Anyone Cry About the National Championship?
It's been the talk of the college football world the minute the first game between LSU-Alabama was over. With the game ending in overtime, many just knew that somehow or someway they were going to see the same game in the national championship.
And they were correct.
Alabama and LSU will meet again in the BCS National Championship Game, and the fans are furious. Well, the fans who think the SEC is overrated at least.
The truth is the BCS got it right. Put the emotions aside, and you'll see that it's true. These are without question the top two teams in the country by far, and if you can't see it, you're biased against the SEC.
So what these two teams met earlier in the year and Alabama lost at home? Somebody had to be the loser; the game couldn't end in a tie. The game went into overtime and was won on a field goal. That was Alabama's only loss of the season.
Every other team the Crimson Tide have beaten this season, they've won by at least 16 points. That includes four ranked teams and three of those being on the road.
LSU ended up going undefeated, so of course Alabama didn't have a chance to win the SEC. Does that make them less of a team because they play in the toughest conference in the toughest division? Again, they lost one game, to the top team in the county by a field goal in overtime.
Does winning the conference mean you're a good team all of a sudden? UCLA was in their conference game, and the Bruins had a 6-6 record and were destroyed by Oregon by a score of 50-0.
They didn't lose to an unranked team that is ranked in the 80s in points scored and points allowed. That would be Oklahoma State who many were trying to make an argument for replacing Alabama in the national championship.
Why?
The Cowboys lost to a team that beat Northern Iowa by one point and needed a late field goal to beat Kansas. Seriously? I know there's people out there who claim a loss is a loss, but it's clearly not true.
The rankings prove it every week. Lose to a respectable team and you fall a couple spots. Lose to a an unranked cupcake and you're lucky if you're still in the polls next week.
The argument seems to be that fans want to see Oklahoma State because they score a ton of points and the game would be a lot more exciting. Well then we're taking excitement and pleasure over what really matters.
The point in the whole thing is to try and find the top two teams in the country and discover the true national champion.
Fans have been crying for years that the BCS doesn't work and we need a playoff. I agree, but it seems like the BCS finally got it right this year and now the fans are still complaining.
You can't have it both ways.
The top two teams are the top two teams. Despite what conference or division they come from. College football is not a fair world and shouldn't have to "give another team a shot" since these two teams have played already.
Speaking of playing already, college football fans have to get use to it. Michigan State and Wisconsin played twice this season. If USC wasn't on probation, the Trojans would have ended up playing the Ducks twice in three weeks.
Does anybody have a problem with that?
Some say that the SEC is having a down season. That's completely not true. Look at the top four defenses in college football right now in yards allowed. Alabama, LSU, Georgia and South Carolina. All SEC teams. You add Florida to the mix, and that's five SEC teams in the Top 10.
Overrated? I think not.
It seems like this is just an issue with the SEC rather than the two teams playing. Fans are tired of the conference because they've won five, soon to be six of the last national championships.
If that's the case, the problem isn't with the two teams or the BCS.
