San Francisco 49ers: The Good, Bad and Ugly in 26-0 Win vs. Rams
The San Francisco 49ers came away with a convincing win against the St. Louis Rams at Candlestick Park. The 26-0 shutout victory was far from perfect, however.
The win give the 49ers a record of 10-2 and keeps them a game-and-a-half ahead of the New Orleans Saints, who play on Sunday Night Football on NBC. Also, a couple of records fell today, one franchise record and an NFL record.
Let's talk about the good, the bad and the ugly things to take away from a historic performance by the 49ers.
The Good
1 of 4Plenty of good stuff for the 49ers:
Frank Gore broke the 49ers franchise record for rushing, passing Joe "the Jet" Perry's career mark by rushing for 73 yards on 21 carries.
Rookie outside linebacker/defensive end Aldon Smith sacked A.J. Feeley twice, and the 49ers sacked the Rams quarterback four times.
The 49ers defense created two more turnovers against the Rams, and the team increased their NFL leads in both total turnovers (28) and point differential (+18).
Quarterback Alex Smith had another great day, and it could have been much better if not for some dropped passes. For the game, Smith went 17/23 for 274 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions.
49ers wide receivers had a banner day. Michael Crabtree, Tedd Ginn and Kyle Williams combined to collect 10 catches for 218 yards and two touchdowns.
The 49ers defense broke an all-time NFL record for not allowing a rushing touchdown for the first 12 games of the season.
The 49ers clinched the NFC West divisional crown.
The Bad
2 of 4A bit of the bad:
Patrick Willis injured his hamstring. This will test the 49ers depth.
49ers receivers let at least three catches go through their hands for incompletions.
The 49ers' third-down conversion rate was terrible as the team went 4/14 (28 percent).
The Ugly
3 of 4Unfortunately, here is some ugly for you:
Vernon Davis missed a sure catch for a touchdown when Alex Smith dropped a dime on him in the end zone. It was right in his hands...
The offensive line woes continued, as the team gave up four more sacks and didn't do a great job blocking up front in the running game.
Penalties were an issue.
The 49ers' red-zone problems persisted against the Rams, and the team settled for a field goal four times.
Conclusion
4 of 4A win is a win, and the 49ers will take them anyway they can get them. But the team looked lethargic in the first half and had trouble at times simply executing a snap on offense.
Keep in mind that this shutout win came against one of the worst teams in the NFL. In addition, the Rams were without their starting quarterback Sam Bradford, who is nursing an ankle injury.
Still, there was more good than bad for the team.
For now, at least for a few hours, the 49ers can revel in their historic win. Congratulations to the entire organization for winning the NFC West.
Come tomorrow morning, though, head coach Jim Harbaugh has plenty to keep his mind occupied and the 49ers have work to do.
