Tony Romo's Hot November Could Spell Doom for Rest of Cowboys' Season

Alex HallNov 30, 2011

Say what you will about Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, but he knows how to perform when November comes around. The issue throughout his career, however, has been his performance in the months that follow the Turkey Day month.

Take a look at Romo's staggering statistics from this November—10 touchdowns, just two interceptions and a 113 passer rating. For his career, Dallas' franchise quarterback has lost just two contests in the third month of the NFL season.

As great as the Eastern Illinois alum has been in November, however, December has usually meant polar-opposite results for Dallas and their gunslinger.

The first time Romo posted more touchdowns than interceptions in December since he began starting full-time for the Cowboys was in 2009. Considering the schedule ahead, there's no better time for the newly married Cowboy to put his naysayers' argument about him not being clutch down the stretch to rest.

Dallas has two key matchups with the New York football Giants in the month ahead, along with a tilt against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and a second meeting with the Philadelphia Eagles. All teams on the remaining schedule are closer to joining the "Suck for Luck" sweepstakes than they are to making the playoffs, holding a combined record of 20-24.

That stat is somewhat skewed considering it counts the G-Men's 6-5 record twice, but you get the point. The Bucs have struggled to find the rhythm that brought them to the playoffs just a season ago, while the Eagles and Giants seem to be imploding.

The schedule favors Dallas, who could conceivably run the table of their remaining games. But in order to do that, they'll need Romo to stay on track with his performances in December and not revert back to the 2008 and 2007 versions of himself.

In a sit-down interview with ESPN that ran during last Sunday's edition of Sunday NFL Countdown, Romo explained that he's able to do things that he couldn't do in previous years skill-wise. The Cowboys and their faithful need this to ring true if they want to contend with the likes of the San Francisco 49ers and the currently undefeated Green Bay Packers as one of the true powerhouse teams in the National Football Conference.
