NBA Free Agents: Big Baby Davis and Most Overrated Players Available

Brian MaziqueNov 30, 2011

Glen "Big Baby" Davis is a nice bench player and fill-in for an injured starter, but that is it. Any team prepared to offer him starter's money in a free-agent deal is crazy. Davis is consistently overweight, lacks athleticism (by NBA standards) and is undersized for the power forward spot. He is a decent rebounder with a dependable 15-foot jump shot. That is a bench player worth no more than $6 million per year.

Davis wants to start, but that will only happen on a mediocre team.

He isn't the only overrated free-agent available, though. Here are two others not worth what they will command:

Nene

Is Nene a quality big man? Absolutely. But that doesn't mean he is worth the $17.5 million max contract he may receive from the likes of Houston or New Jersey. Since when does a center that has never averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds or two blocks a game worth a max contract?

Tyson Chandler

Chandler getting offered a major contract is almost like all of the Chicago Bulls' role players from the 1990s getting free-agent deals after winning championships with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen.

The 10-year veteran has only averaged double-figure scoring twice in his career. Chandler is a good role player, but he is still just a role player. Tying up a chunk of a team's salary cap space on him is a bad move, unless it is to Miami, where his inclusion could mean even better chances at a title than they already have.

Still, Chandler is a $8 million man tops.
