If Jim Caldwell Is Fired, Who Takes over as Next Indianapolis Colts Head Coach?

Zach KruseNov 30, 2011

Losers of 11 consecutive games, the Indianapolis Colts are in the midst of one of the worst seasons in recent memory. A quick look at their remaining schedule gives little hope that the Colts can avoid just the second 0-16 season in NFL history.

Losing quarterback Peyton Manning crippled the team's chances before the season even started, but there's no excuse for one player to mean the difference between a 10-6 team and one that goes 0-16. Eventually, the blame must shift to head coach Jim Caldwell.

I don't think many would question the decision to fire Caldwell if the Colts finish the season with no wins. However, if the Colts do decide to axe Caldwell after the season, who would be the viable replacements in Indianapolis?

We'll quickly run down some of the candidates for the position.

Jeff Fisher

After taking a year off from coaching, the former Titans head coach is ready to get back into a lead job. He coached the Titans for 16 seasons, so he knows the Colts and the division. Fisher's name will surely be tied to several jobs this offseason.

Mike Zimmer

Zimmer has overseen the Bengals defense since 2008, and his unit has been in the Top 15 in all four seasons. He's generally seen as one of the top assistant coaches available and could help turn around a Colts defense that has been one of the catalysts to the team's 0-11 start.

His name has to be mentioned. Tressel serves as the Colts' gameday consultant after leading the Ohio State University for 10 seasons. You'd have to argue that Tressel's hiring would be unlikely, but you can't discount the possibility of the Colts pursuing the idea.

Winston Moss

Moss may be the most head coach ready assistant available. A former NFL linebacker, Moss is currently the Packers' inside linebackers coach and assistant head coach. For an 11-0 team that is the odds on favorite to defend their Super Bowl title, Moss's name will be in demand.

Perry Fewell

The Giants defensive coordinator previously served as the Bills' interim head coach in 2009. He led the Bills to a 3-4 record over the final seven games after Dick Jauron was fired. The Giants' dismantling by Drew Brees isn't a glowing endorsement for him right now, but he's a bright defensive mind.
