Bulls Rumors: Chicago Should Not Get Hopes Up for Brandon Roy
The Chicago Bulls desperately need a good shooting guard.
That’s exactly what Brandon Roy is, but they don’t have any shot at acquiring the Portland Trail Blazers superstar.
John Canzano over at The Oregonian first reported that Roy is going to be one of the first players cut by the newly established amnesty clause in the most recent CBA.
""Brandon's out," a league executive told me Monday. "Don't know the exact details, but everyone around the league knows it's way, way done. Paul [Allen] and Bert (Kolde) are calling the shots on this one."
"
This means that teams across the league are going to be vying to pick up a player who was once owed $68 million over the next four years for a very cheap price.
The catch is that only teams with salary cap space get the first crack at him once he is cut.
Matt Moore of CBSSports.com points this out.
"Under the terms of the new CBA, an auction will be held with teams who have cap room able to bid to take on all or part of the player's contract. The winning bid counts against the new team's cap, it's believed.
"
Obviously, unless a GM is absolutely and certifiably insane, no one is picking up Roy’s entire contract. However, it is very plausible that someone takes a stab at him before the vultures with no cap room can sign him for the veteran’s minimum.
The Timberwolves and Warriors are two clubs with cap space that could use a SG with the potential that Roy has. If they feel his injury risk is worth the reward, there is no point in them not signing him for a few million a season.
After what he did last year in one quarter against the Dallas Mavericks in the playoffs, that risk is certainly still worth it. I think everyone knows that.
Chicago would be the luckiest team in the world to have Roy fall into their laps.
While he makes perfect sense and is the two-guard they need to push them past the Miami Heat and into the finals, the Bulls just won’t get a crack at him.
