NBA Trade Rumors: Who's Going Back on the Block and Where Could They Land?
Prior to the NBA lockout there was a flood of players on the chopping block, and such traffic is only going to increase now that business is set to resume.
With organizations staring at a shortened season, there has to be a sense of urgency to get any moves done soon rather than later. Teams already have far less time than usual to get themselves prepared for the season, and this task only increases in difficulty when you add a new player to the mix.
As a result, players will return to the trade block early, and franchises will look to resolve their situations quickly.
For many the players, the question is not if they will return to the block, but rather, where are they potentially headed after they do so?
Michael Beasley of Minnesota Timberwolves
1 of 10With Derrick Williams now on the roster, Michael Beasley seems to be the odd man out for the Minnesota Timberwolves, and it is likely that his name returns to the chopping block.
Prior to the draft, the Timberwolves reportedly offered Beasley and the second overall draft to the Lakers in exchange for Paul Gasol, but nothing came to fruition.
Beasley's attitude could deter many teams from taking a serious look at him, and therefore limits his potential destinations. Minnesota was apparently engaged in talks with the Indiana Pacers regarding Beasley, and it is possible they could be revisited.
The market for Beasley right now is pretty thin. If he is able to get his act together early on, perhaps other teams could come into play.
Potential Destinations: Indiana Pacers.
Ramon Sessions of Cleveland Cavaliers
2 of 10Ramon Sessions has rarely spent a day off the chopping block, and this trend continued leading up to this year's draft.
There were a variety of teams, including the New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks and Lakers that contacted the Cleveland Cavaliers in regards to Sessions' availability. The combo guard has never had the luxury of continuity and either one of those teams can offer him a stable role in their rotation.
With Kyrie Irving set to take the reigns in Cleveland, Sessions could easily find himself back on the block, and if he does, there will be multiple teams that come calling.
Perhaps more than we could currently imagine.
Potential Destinations: Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks and Milwaukee Bucks.
Steve Nash of Phoenix Suns
3 of 10Despite the Phoenix Suns maintaining that Steve Nash wasn't going anywhere, reports surfaced prior to the draft stating that the point guard was offered up to the Timberwolves in an attempt to get the second overall pick that turned into Derrick Williams.
No deal was ever made, but Minnesota was not the only team Nash was linked to, as the Knicks also inquired about the veteran's ability. Now that New York boasts Iman Shumpert, whom the Suns were heavily interested in leading up to the draft, fuel is only going to be added to that fire.
Teams like the Knicks are going to try and use Phoenix's current state of rebuilding as a their main selling point, stating the Suns should capitalize off of Nash's trade value now in exchange for some young talent.
And as LeBron James pointed out, there will be no shortage of interest in Nash's services should he return to the block.
Potential Destinations: New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves and Miami Heat.
O.J. Mayo of Memphis Grizzlies
4 of 10O.J. Mayo is another player who constantly finds himself at the center of trade rumors, and that doesn't appear it is going to change anytime soon.
The Chicago Bulls made a strong push for Mayo, and he was also linked to the Indiana Pacers as well. Even the Knicks managed to get involved last season, and while their negotiations were purely Carmelo Anthony motivated at the time, the team is in need of a player to strengthen its perimeter.
If Memphis is as committed to Rudy Gay as we are to believe, Mayo is more expendable than ever. The two play different positions, but Mayo was on the block while Gay was injured, and now that he is on his way back, there is almost nothing stopping the Memphis Grizzlies from shopping him harder.
Mayo is a good fit on the Grizzlies, but it is more than likely he finds his true niche elsewhere.
Potential Destinations: Indiana Pacers, New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls
Lamar Odom of Los Angeles Lakers
5 of 10With the Lakers targeting another superstar to play alongside Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom's days in Los Angeles seem to be numbered.
Odom has been mentioned in potential deals with both the 76ers and the Warriors, as well as any trade package the Lakers will put together for Dwight Howard. His frequent inclusion in negotiations is a result of his capacity to play under any and all circumstances, a virtue that is valued by many.
Teams' interest in taking Odom on in return for one of their stars says a lot about Odom's abilities. Unfortunately for him, it also means that he is a near lock to become collateral damage in the Lakers' quest for another superstar.
Potential Destinations: Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic.
Monta Ellis of Golden State Warriors
6 of 10The high-scoring Monta Ellis is likely to find his way back onto the trading block, despite head coach Mark Jackson's insistence that he wants the combo guard to remain on the team.
Prior to the lockout, Ellis was mentioned in a deal that would have landed Andre Iguodala on the Warriors, and was linked to another trade that would have sent him to the Lakers in exchange for Lamar Odom. There has also been chatter about both the Memphis Grizzlies and Bulls entering into the fold as well.
Based on the numerous teams that have already shown substantial interest in Ellis, it is clear that the Warriors have done their homework on the shopping side. With Stephen Curry ready to assume the leadership role, the team needs to focus on defense, and Ellis is their most valuable trade chip in terms of being able to acquire such a piece.
Golden State could give a backcourt of Curry and Ellis one last chance, but it is unlikely they fair much better together than last season, which may force the Warriors to pull the trigger on one of the deals that will be on the table.
Potential Destinations: Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls and Memphis Grizzlies.
Marcus Camby of Portland Trail Blazers
7 of 10Marcus Camby's name found its way into trade rumors last season, even though he showed a strong desire to remain with the Portland Trail Blazers.
While Camby is 37, his prowess on the defensive end hasn't aged at all, and makes him enticing to a number of teams. His name has been thrown around in reference to both the Magic and Rockets, and has also drawn serious interest from the Knicks as well. A rumor even surfaced last season about the possibility of him being dealt to the Charlotte Bobcats.
The Blazers are a team on the rise, and although Camby is a valuable piece to their puzzle, they could opt to move him since he still holds some substantial trade value, and because his $9.2 million salary comes off the books next summer.
If Portland decides to part ways with the veteran center, they will have a variety of teams at their disposal ready to negotiate.
Potential Destinations: Orlando Magic, Houston Rockets, New York Knicks and Charlotte Bobcats
Josh Smith of Atlanta Hawks
8 of 10Josh Smith has officially overstayed his welcome with the Atlanta Hawks, a notion that is clearly evident by the team's attempt to gauge his trade value leading up to this year's draft.
Smith's explosive attitude has forced Atlanta's hand in the matter, but it is his explosive play on both ends of the ball that will have suitors lining up to make a play for him.
The forward's departure provides the Hawks with some much desired cap relief in addition to relieving themselves of his volatile tendencies. Shopping him also presents an opportunity to acquire some promising young talent that they can use to build around or flip for another high-quality player.
Smith hasn't requested a trade himself, but the New Jersey Nets, Boston Celtics, Rockets and Magic are among his list of preferred destinations. Oddly enough, his list of teams he would like to play for includes those could wind up making the strongest push for his services.
Potential Destinations: Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic and New Jersey Nets.
Andre Iguodala of Philadelphia 76ers
9 of 10If past events have taught us anything, it's that Andre Iguodala's name is a lock to wind up back on the trading block.
Whether the 76ers will ultimately deal him or not remains to be seen, but the versatile shooting guard is guaranteed to generate a lot of interest either way.
Leading up to the draft, Iguodala was linked to a deal that would have sent him to the Lakers for Lamar Odom, and was nearly sent to the Warriors in exchange for Monta Ellis as well. His name has also been mentioned in a potential swap for Los Angeles Clippers' center Chris Kaman.
The versatile Iguodala makes a great target for any number of teams, but Philadelphia always seems to be window shopping when it comes to the defensive-minded genius; the 76ers are constantly seeking to maximize their return for the shooting guard.
While we shouldn't expect any deal to go down immediately, the possibility of Iguodala donning a different uniform is stronger than ever.
Potential Destinations: Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers.
Chris Paul of New Orleans Hornets
10 of 10Chris Paul made waves in the trade rumor-mill last summer, and he has already started to top headlines regarding potential deals post-lockout.
After Chris Broussard's tweet last night that openly stated Paul preferred to play with the Knicks, and would wait until free-agency to do so, it is clear the point guard is going to be dealt at some point.
While Broussard acknowledged that the Clippers could come into play, Paul's willingness to wait until free-agency is incredibly telling. If we put the notion of New York aside, at the very least we are left with the certainty that Paul's time in New Orleans is nearly over.
Don't expect the Hornets to be taking any risks, especially after this turn of events. Paul is going to be back on the block, and New Orleans is going to shop him hard.
Teams like the Lakers may try and enter the fold, but now, it is possible that Paul has already decided on his future.
Potential Destination: Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks
