Matt Leinart Injury: T.J. Yates Is Far Better Option Than Brett Favre for Texans

Alex KayNov 28, 2011

The Texans need to go to war with T.J. Yates under center and should not even be thinking about bringing in Brett Favre and the circus that follows him into Houston.

Matt Leinart is done for the season after breaking his collarbone, and now the team needs to decide to either keep starting Yates or bring in a veteran replacement like Favre.

It just wouldn’t make any sense to bring in a 42-year-old quarterback who has been retired since January and hasn’t played good football since the 2009 season.

Yates, a rookie, needs a chance to play and has the opportunity to be the future signal-caller for this franchise if things pan out for him. He’s been with the team since training camp after being drafted in the fifth round this year.

You know what Favre has been doing related to football in that time period? He was a guest in the broadcast booth for a Southern Miss Golden Eagles game back in the beginning of October.

Yates excelled at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and holds 37 records at the school that he attained as the starter for the better part of four seasons.

He has all the tools necessary to be a professional quarterback and excelled in a pro-style offense under Butch Davis in college.

Coach Gary Kubiak also sung his praises on draft day.

"

“This kid is a fine player and had a very solid career in college,” Kubiak said. “Nowadays, we look at some players who have one-year careers. This kid had a nice four-year career and played his best as a senior. I like everything he stands for. We’re very fortunate.”

"

At 6’4”, 220 pounds, Yates isn’t physically lacking anything to play the position and has a solid arm that can make every throw.

Just because his ascent from third-stringer to starter has been accelerated by injury does not mean the Texans should panic and throw in the towel on him. Getting reps with this team is perfect for his development and rookie signal-callers have had success in the playoffs, somewhere the Texans are likely headed.

Look at Ben Roethlisberger and Mark Sanchez a few years back.

The team can rely on Arian Foster and Ben Tate to pound the rock and grind wins out and when Yates is forced to throw, he has Andre Johnson as a safety net. It’s an ideal situation.

Favre would be a stupid decision to bring in when the answer is already clearly on the roster.

Yates performed solidly in his first NFL action on Sunday and should be given a chance to prove himself before someone else is signed to be a starter.
