Are Melissa Kellerman and Kelsi Reich the Dallas Cowboys' Good Luck Charms?

Josh SchochNov 27, 2011

Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders have been making headlines as often as the actual team as of late. Kelsi Reich and Melissa Kellerman have been the source of it all, and they have fans thinking: Are cheerleaders good luck charms for the Cowboys?

As sports fans, we are all superstitious to some degree. Whether your teams wins because you wear your lucky jersey or because you sit in the same spot, in the same way, eating the same food in the same pattern every week, we all have personal rituals to help our team to victory. Don't try to deny it either.

The Cowboys appear to have their own good luck charms: hot cheerleaders.

Whether it's because opposing teams are too distracted by cheerleaders to pay attention to how Tony Romo is changing the offense or for some other reason, when cheerleaders make headlines the Cowboys win.

Dallas is currently riding a four-game win streak, due in part to their cheerleaders.

In a home game against the Buffalo Bills in Week 10, Kelsi Reich made headlines as her boyfriend David Nelson came to town.

Most NFL teams have a strict, no-fraternizing policy when it comes to players and cheerleaders. Apparently, those rules do not apply when the cheerleader and player are not for the same team.

Nelson, a Bills wide receiver, caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick in the second quarter of the game and then proceeded to run along the sidelines to give the ball to his beautiful girlfriend.

An act that would have made most girls happy had to be a conflict of interest for Reich, as her team gave up a touchdown and it was her boyfriend who got the touchdown. Decisions, decisions.

Reich kept the ball and made headlines the next day.

Perhaps Nelson jinxed his team because the Bills were unable to mount any offense after that, eventually losing the game 44-7.

No one thought much of the cheerleaders being a good luck charm after that incident, but less than two weeks later the cheerleaders made headlines again, ensuring another Cowboys victory.

During Thanksgiving Day football, cheerleader Melissa Kellerman was tackled by tight end Jason Witten at the start of the fourth quarter.

The Cowboys were losing 10-16 at that point, but began a comeback. They then scored a touchdown on the next play, proving Kellerman to be a good luck charm as well.

The Dolphins then kicked a field goal and the Cowboys drove the field to kick a field goal of their own, winning the game 20-19.

The Cowboys cheerleaders appear to have an effect on the game (or at least more so than usual). They are making headlines and the team is winning.

Two incidents with cheerleaders over the last two home games have given the Cowboys two more wins and a half-game lead in the NFC East. If the Cowboys win their division, they will have at least one home game in the playoffs and the cheerleaders certainly need to give Tony Romo some luck during those games.

Cowboys cheerleaders typically get the most attention of any cheerleading squad, but not this much. They are proving to the world that they actually have an effect on the game, and Cowboys fans have to wonder which cheerleader will make headlines when the Giants come to town in two weeks.

Dallas could certainly use some luck in that game.

One more cheerleader-incident could prove that the Cowboys have a good luck charm on the side of the field. It could also explain how they are 5-1 at home but 2-3 on the road.
