Jack Del Rio and 6 NFL Coaches Just Begging to Be Fired
There used to be a commercial in the 1970s of Robert Conrad, a brash actor of the decade, holding an Eveready battery on his shoulder, staring into the camera and daring you to knock it off.
While many of you don't remember that, the image of the man daring someone to make him mad is similar to many NFL coaches this year who are causing owners and management headaches and ulcers.
They are daring their bosses to fire them.
Missed scoring opportunities, poor offensive play, missed defensive assignments, they all add up.
And don't get me started on injuries because this is football and, well, sometimes you need to play through the pain.
But these coaches are doing enough to cause pain for their teams and they are just bucking for a pink slip.
7. Norv Turner, San Diego Chargers
1 of 7Norv has been the center of controversy for years in San Diego as he constantly is the subject of rumors about being fired.
And the Chargers have had some really good teams under his watch.
This year, not so good. The Chargers are riding a five-game losing streak and, well, the speculations continue to swirl.
6. Mike Shanahan, Washington Redskins
2 of 7This may be a foregone conclusion.
Shanahan started the season with two mediocre quarterbacks. He will finish with two less-than-average quarterbacks and a bevy of players in injured reserve.
Even before the injuries, there were signs this team would suffer—even after a 3-0 start of the season.
Shanahan will take the bullet for this organization.
And Daniel Snyder still start over, AGAIN!
5. Chan Gailey, Buffalo Bills
3 of 7When the Bills started the season 4-1 and defeated the Patriots, hope was alive in Buffalo.
Chan Gailey and his team have fallen on hard times since then. The Bills are now 5-5 and while injuries have crept into the equation, they still have the nucleus to make some noise.
Could the fast start and more-than-subtle collapse of late lead to Gailey feeling some heat?
In Buffalo, anything is possible. But there is a good young team here and the start of something decent.
4. Todd Haley, Kansas City Chiefs
4 of 7Maybe the team is expecting Kyle Orton to be the team's savior this week and the rest of the season.
Haley has had a season most coaches wish they could forget. Losing streaks, winning streaks, another losing streak.
Oh, don't forget injuries to his starting running back and now his starting quarterback.
After two seasons, the fire be out in Arrowhead.
3. Rex Ryan, New York Jets
5 of 7Is it me or does Rex Ryan's mouth continually get him in trouble?
Ryan is a great coach, but the team is reeling and needs a safety net.
Two straight AFC Championships with Mark Sanchez behind center has been a great thing for Jets fans, but Sanchez has not taken the next step and Ryan, who has had plenty to say this year—both good an bad.
Maybe both have worn out their welcome.
2. Jack Del Rio, Jacksonville Jaguars
6 of 7I hope this is not a sign of what will happen.
The Jaguars have placed important cogs in their defense on IR this week, and have also had significant injuries in the past two weeks.
Will the injuries be the reason owner Wayne Weaver gives JDR another year to fix the problems?
The fans here in Jacksonville sure hope not. This team could easily be 7-3 if it was coached properly.
1. Andy Reid, Philadelphia Eagles
7 of 7They beat the Giants last week without Michael Vick. They have the most talent in the NFL. They signed the most free agents in the offseason.
And they are still losing.
The media has speculated over the years about Reid leaving the game because of personal reasons. This year may just be for lack of motivating a team that could and should win it all.
