Week 12 Waiver Wire Options: Jerome Simpson and Breakout WRs to Ignore

David DanielsNov 21, 2011

Wide receivers are more inconsistent than a cheap, dollar-store flashlight.  You never know when either is going to turn on.

The playmakers on this list did what they were paid to do on Sunday.  They put up big numbers exposing the opposing secondary.  Despite their success, don’t waste your time adding them, though; that success won’t be replicated.

4. Jerome Simpson

No, not just because he’s a pothead.

Simpson’s good games are great, but his poor games are horrendous.  He has recorded three 100-yard games this season.  In games where he hasn’t surpassed the century mark, though, he failed to even put up 45 yards receiving.

His eight-catch, 152-yard performance against the Baltimore Ravens resulted from A.J. Green being out with an injury.  Once Green returns, Simpson’s numbers will depart.

Pass on Michael Crabtree, but not because of Crabtree.  Alex Smith isn’t a talented enough passer to get the former Texas Tech first-round pick the football consistently.  Crabtree caught more than five passes in only two games this season.

His seven-catch, 120-yard performance won’t replicate itself.  That breakout game came vs. the Arizona Cardinals—enough said.  Crabtree has made only one end zone visit this season; he has no upside.

Pass on Jabar Gaffney, but not because of Gaffney.  Wait—didn’t I just say something like that?

Like Alex Smith will prevent Michael Crabtree from putting up solid numbers, Gaffney will never be a consistent producer with Rex Grossman throwing to him.  The former New England Patriot caught seven balls for 115 yards and a touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.  That TD happened to only be Gaffney's third of the season while he never previously surpassed 70 receiving yards.

1. Mike Williams

If you cut Mike Williams and are primed to re-add him after his big game, you better re-think that.  After being projected to blow up after an impressive rookie year, Williams has experienced the definition of a sophomore slump.

He still hasn’t passed the 100-yard receiving mark in a single game this season.  The touchdown Williams caught on the Green Bay Packers ended a scoring drought that had lasted since his only other TD way back in Week 1.
