Armageddon Rages in Buffalo, NY, and I Was There!

John KindelanDec 16, 2008

On Sunday, Dec. 14, Armageddon came to the HSBC Arena here in Buffalo, NY. The WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) broadcasted their monthly Pay Per View event here at the arena, the December Pay Per View was called Armageddon.

The fans waited outside the arena at 7 PM for the doors to open, the event started at 7:45 with what is called a "dark match" between the champs Miz and Morrison against Jesse and Festus. The Miz and Morrison, two former stars of reality TV, pulled off the win and retained their titles.

The first match of the night after the amazing pyrotechnics, and fantastic rendition of the National Anthem by the incredible and quite sexy, Lillian Garcia, was Matt Hardy the ECW champion vs. Vladamir Kozlov.

Kozlov continued his record of being unbeaten in the WWE thus far by pinning the champ in a non-title match. This, in my opinion, was the slow match of the night. The moves were a bit boring and Kozlov fights like he was trained by a wrestler of the '80s, exaggerating his being punched and his "dazed" look.

But what do you expect from a cartoon version of the bad guy Russian of the WWE. Why was this a non-title match? If only for the reason so that Matt and Jeff could hold the titles together at the same time. Seeing that this wasn't for the title was clue No. 1 that the other Hardy was meant for Gold.

Nex up, the first match to ensue inner family fighting in our section, CM Punk being cheered on by myself and my oldest son Dyllan. Versus Rey Mysterio, being cheered on by everyone else and the favorite of my youngest son, Austin. Sorry Aus, but I really wanted to see CM Punk move on in the race for the Intercontinental Championship to face William Regal.

As I said this was the final qualifying match to see who was the number one contender and the two superstars put on an outstanding match with some incredible spots and high flying action. In the end Punk wins with a GTS the Go To Sleep!

A great move also to use when tucking kids into bed. After the match Punk helped up Rey and they shook hands, after all they are both "good guys" or what is called "Faces" in wrestling lingo.

The next three matches, Finlay vs. Mark Henry, The eight tag team Diva's Santa's little helper match, and Randy Orton vs. Batista were just okay, and had a couple of disappointing moments as well as some great Oh My God Moments.

Finlay vs Henry OMG Moment - Mark Henry cracks Finlay's shileighlei over his knee. Disapointing moment? Not enough Hornswaggle. Seeing the little guy get involved in a match where there were no rules would have been great.

The Diva tag-team match - OMG Moment - The outfits...beautiful Divas in beautiful santa outfits..nuff said. Disappointing point of the match, actually it wasn't so bad, they are definitely getting better at their moves. Some of them are more models than wrestlers, but it wasn't bad.

Orton Vs. Batista - OMG moment - Batista wins. I was really surprised at this and it ties to the Disappointing moment - No RKO from Orton. The move is great and he didn't get to hit it once. His spitting and growling when he was sizing Batista up for it was great, but it just never came. Very disappointing.

Then came the match that I was there to see. The World Heavyweight Champion John Cena vs. Chris Jericho. I have been a Jericho fan since his days in WCW and when he came to WWE it was fantastic.

He had a great run in the beginning but his run in 2008 has just been fantastic. He actually won Superstar of the Year on Monday the eighth (same night I won Blogger of the year... coincidence? I think not). He was the champion up until last month when Cena captured it from him at the last Pay Per View.

This match was outstanding and had myself, Dyllan, Kortney, and Austin all cheering for Jericho, while everyone else around us was rooting for the fan favorite, Cena. It was back and forth with reversal and counter, one after the other in some very original well timed moves. It was amazing to watch in person and I really want to order the replay of it, just so I can see how this match went down on TV.

In the end, Cena got Jericho to tap out, but the match was great and Cena looked as though he had been through hell. I wouldn't be surprised if he came out on Monday Night Raw tonight, saying Jericho really tested him.

Cena is an 'okay' wrestler. He's not all that technically good when it comes to moves, but he's good on the mic and good with the crowd. Jericho made him look like a good wrestler. It was by far the match of the night. Followed very very closely by the final match Jeff Hardy vs. HHH vs. Edge.

The Triple Threat for the title was again full of outstanding OMG moments. Edge running across two announcer desks to spear Hardy through the thrid one was incredible. Jeff's Swanton Bomb move where he dives off the top rope looked insane to see in person.

We had outside interference from Kozlov running to the ring to stop HHH from getting the pin. Matt Hardy then came running out to stop Kozlov. Come to think of it he attacked everyone but Edge so I'm sure that will turn into part of the story.

The match ended with Jerff Hardy hitting a Swanton on Edge, who had just been Pedigreed by HHH. Hardy steals the pin and gets the three count to obtain Championship Gold for the first time becoming the WWE champion.

This was a big deal for him to win, as the story playing out was that Jeff can never win the big match. Well he finally did and had a good half hour celebration in the ring afterwards. Shaking hands with fans, his brother coming out to celebrate with him, and even HHH coming back into the ring to raise Jeff's hand.

I'm not sure if it made it on television, but Edge was down behind the announce tables still all dazed the entire time Jeff was in the ring. The Refs and a couple others came to help him up but he kept acting out of sorts and pushing them away.

He finally stumbled to the Raw announce table, but Cole and Lawler had left already. However, the king left his crown behind. Edge probably thought he'd be nice and bring it back to Jerry so he scooped it up and clutched it as though it was the title. He made his way back up the ramp but before he hit the entrance of the castle, he actually put the crown on his head. It was pretty funny, but I don't think it made it to TV.

Overall an outstanding show and quiet possibly the Pay Per View of the Year my whole family loved it and had a great time. The Buffalo crowd was fantastic and sounded great throughout the night; I can't wait to watch the replay.
