Patriots vs. Jets: How New York Can Stop Wes Welker and New England's Offense

Tony SantorsaNov 10, 2011

Stopping the New England Patriots' offense is certainly not an easy thing to do—however teams have been able to contain the NFL's second best offense for the past three games. In the eyes of the New York Jets cornerback, Antonio Cromartie, it's all about being physical.

So being physical stops New England's offense? It could be and Cromartie certainly believes that's how it can be done per tweet by ESPN New York:

"

"Every team is starting to notice that if you bang him around, they're timing is knocked off."

Really? Is it that simple? I think that it's safe to say that all teams try to be physical against wide receivers, no matter what team they're playing.

However, Cromartie could be onto something as Wes Welker spoke with ESPN Boston earlier this week and mentioned how teams have been more physical lately:

"

“There has been a lot more man coverage, guys getting in your face and grabbing and doing whatever they need to do...At the same time, you have to understand that and do business as business is being done, and be physical and get open. That’s what it comes down to.”

"

In New England's previous meeting with the Jets this season, Welker didn't necessarily have a great game as he caught only five passes for 124 yards. Keep in mind that one of Welker's receptions was worth 73 yards, so without that catch and run he only recorded 51 yards. For Welker's standards, that's nothing special as the Jets can clearly cause some issues against New England's wide receivers.

Entering Sunday's prime-time matchup of the Jets and Patriots on Sunday Night Football, I think it's safe to say that Darrelle Revis will likely be lining up on Welker for the most part with Cromartie being mixed in a little bit.

When it comes to stopping New England's offense, it's really no secret: Put pressure on Tom Brady and shutdown Welker. If Rex Ryan's defense can do that Sunday night, then they'll likely find themselves atop of the AFC East with a victory over the Patriots.
