Bill Belichick Allegedly Paying Player to Fight Bolsters Genius Persona

Kyle VassaloNov 4, 2011

If you thought Bill Belichick's win-at-all-costs mentality was over the top before, his latest mini scandal is going to floor you.

Belichick allegedly paid Chad Eaton to get into fights during practice when he was in Cleveland, according to the Dayton Daily News.

Eaton said, “If practice was going slow, he’d look at me and just say, ‘It’s time'. He wanted me to get on somebody’s (case) and start a little fight. I was known for that and it paid off on Fridays. There’d always be some extra money in my locker. Practice players don’t make much, so I really appreciated it.”

Don't think for a second that this wasn't a calculated move by Belichick. Everything he does has a purpose. The mini outbursts weren't some sort of twisted entertainment for Belichick.

Belichick is a polarizing figure. Those who are fans of Belichick will call this unethical act motivation, while Belichick haters will claim this just another example of the cheating coach bending rules and engaging in shady acts to get ahead.

Belichick's methods are unconventional, but they work. This is something that happened years ago and in no way was Eaton trying to take a shot at Belichick or throw his former coach under the bus.

He kicked a practice player down some extra cash to ruffle feathers at practice. Big whoop.

Let's also not forget that we are talking about Belichick when he was a part of the Browns organization. Who cares? It's time to leave Belichick alone. There are far shadier tactics used in the NFL every day.

Belichick's unpopular image will have people up in arms over this, but it's just another example of people disliking Belichick just to dislike Belichick.
