BCS Rankings: Houston, Boise State and Polarizing Programs Looking to Crash BCS
Boise State, Houston and Southern Mississippi are currently the three ranked teams from non-automatic qualifying conferences that the tradition-inspired BCS pollsters tend to hate see do well.
I am glad that these smaller programs are making noise in the BCS rankings and actually have a chance to play in a major BCS bowl this season.
Boise State and Houston are coming up and are going to make a serious run at playing in a BCS bowl if they continue to constantly blow out their opponents and go undefeated this season.
It seems very possible that both teams will do exactly that as they both have relatively easy schedules and will be heavy favorites in each game they play from here on out.
Unfortunately, I think the voters and polls would rather see teams with losses on their record than an undefeated team like Houston in a BCS bowl.
They already have a hard enough time swallowing the fact that Boise State and TCU are usually battling and beating the big-time programs in the top bowl games and don’t want to add a third program to that list.
I have a feeling that a one-loss Stanford or two-loss Oregon team would be their selection for an at-large berth as well either a two-loss Oklahoma team or a one-loss Oklahoma State team.
Houston is going to have to get a lot of luck to join Boise State this season in a BCS bowl, but I think they more than deserve to be there.
Their best bet would be to have Southern Mississippi win out and then soundly beat them in the Conference USA championship game. That would be a big win over a ranked opponent and could be enough to propel them into one of the top bowl games.
If that happens, and a number of teams in the top 10 of the current BCS rankings stumble, we could see Houston and Boise State both playing in some very prestigious games.
