BCS Standings: Wisconsin, Michigan State and Teams That Are Lucky to Be Ranked
This past weekend of the college football season was a very revealing one, especially in the Big Ten.
Both Wisconsin and Michigan State experienced bad losses and, frankly, they were losses that neither team could afford.
That being said, the Big Ten wasn't the only conference that experienced ranked teams going down for the count.
Losing hurts, but it seems to hurt even more in college football where every week is integral to the BCS standings and national championship race. Here are a few teams that got it handed to them and are lucky just to remain relevant if not ranked.
Wisconsin
Wisconsin couldn't afford a loss, especially after losing to Michigan State just a week before. The Badgers still had a great shot at the Big Ten title even with that one loss, but more than one would put them in severe jeopardy. Going against an Ohio State team that has struggled all year, it was somewhat of a foregone conclusion that Russell Wilson and the Badgers would be able to pull one off. They lost 29-33, though, and find themselves checking in at No. 20 this week, falling all the way from No. 6 just two weeks ago.
Michigan State
After beating the aforementioned Badgers on a last-second Hail Mary, the Spartans looked to be in good position to make a run at the Big Ten title. All they had to do was beat Nebraska, or at the very least be somewhat competitive. Everyone was questioning whether or not the Spartans were a legitimate contender, and they essentially answered those questions with a 24-3 loss at Nebraska. They are lucky to be ranked No. 17.
Auburn
At 6-3 I just keep getting this feeling that the Tigers are very overrated. They've been mediocre if anything, and even having them at No. 22 is somewhat of a stretch. I believe they will eventually find their own level, though, coming up this week against Georgia and to end the season against Alabama.
Texas
The Longhorns are not a good football team, and I'm not sure why their 5-2 record isn't enough to prove that. Sure, they beat up on Kansas 43-0, but the Jayhawks aren't necessarily known as a football powerhouse. The last part of the Longhorns schedule is absolutely brutal, and I don't see them holding the ranking for much longer.
