UFC 137 Results: Georges St-Pierre vs Nick Diaz and 6 Other Title Fights We Want

Vince CareyOct 30, 2011

Much like Chael Sonnen had everyone talking after UFC 136, Nick Diaz has taken the MMA world by storm after UFC 137.

As if a dominant victory over BJ Penn wasn’t enough, Diaz decided to call out Georges St-Pierre, complain about not making any money for the hundred thousandth time, and get GSP pissed off enough to demand that Diaz gets the next title shot.

All in all, it was a pretty successful night for the former Strikeforce champion.

After the beating that Diaz just put on Penn, more fans than ever think he has a legitimate chance at taking out St-Pierre, and when they fight Super Bowl weekend it will be one of the most anticipated fights ever.

Georges St-Pierre vs Nick Diaz

1 of 7

With all apologies to Carlos Condit, this fight needed to be made immediately and Diaz had technically earned his shot months ago anyway.

Diaz has gotten into St-Pierre’s head, which makes this the most intriguing GSP fight we’ve had in years, since we have no idea of what an angry St-Pierre is capable of.

Diaz has also proved he is world class with his win over Penn, and though he had a few fans willing to give him a shot against GSP last time, that number has likely tripled since last night.

Dominick Cruz vs Urijah Faber III

2 of 7

The first fight was over in minutes, the second was a 5 round battle that is a fight of the year candidate, and the third has the potential to be better than the first two combined.

If Faber can get passed Brian Bowles at UFC 139, this fight will be made quickly, and it would open up a rivalry that has never really cooled off.

Cruz and Faber really don’t like each other and both feel like they need to prove that they are better than the other, so this fight has a lot of pride on the line to go with the belt.

Cain Velasquez vs Junior Dos Santos

3 of 7

Unlike the rest of the fights on this list, we know exactly when and where this one is going down.

Velasquez and Dos Santos are set to square off in just two weeks for the promotions debut on FOX, in one of the most anticipated title fights in UFC history.

Highly talented heavyweights have been few and far between during UFC history, so to have two guys as talented as Velasquez and Dos Santos fighting for the belt is huge for the promotion.

These two will bring out the best in each other in what is sure to be an epic heavyweight battle.

Frankie Edgar vs Gilbert Melendez

4 of 7

A unification bout between the UFC and Strikeforce lightweight champions would be insane.

Frankie Edgar and Gilbert Melendez are considered the two best 155 lb fighters in the world, but until ZUFFA finds a way to bring Melendez over to the UFC, it’s a fight that they can’t make.

With similar skill sets, this fight has the potential to be a 5 round war to be remembered, with Edgar’s having a slight edge in the stand up and Melendez with an equally small advantage on the ground.

Jon Jones vs Rashad Evans

5 of 7

We have to get to see this fight eventually, right?

Jones and Evans have been going at it in the media since March, and as long as Jones beats Lyoto Machida at UFC 140 in December, they should be fighting in early 2012.

The history between the two fighters is common knowledge by now, but for the few people out there who don’t know, Jones and Evans are former training partners with a boatload of bad blood between them at this point.

This is a huge fight for the UFC and a marquee fight for the company’s fastest rising star in Jones.

Jose Aldo vs Frankie Edgar

6 of 7

The only weight class that doesn’t have a marquee fight waiting to be made within it, as Jose Aldo has taken out all of the big names in his division.

While Chad Mendes is going to be the toughest matchup that Aldo has ever had, it isn’t exactly a fight that has people talking, so I took the liberty of throwing Frankie Edgar into the mix.

Edgar should probably be fighting at 145 lbs anyway, and a fight with Aldo would be a fun one. It would be fun to see how Edgar’s speed stacks up with the smaller guys, and if he would really have the power that we think he would.

Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonnen II

7 of 7

The one guy in MMA who the media loves more than Nick Diaz, Chael Sonnen went all out in his effort to make Anderson Silva fight him again, when he grabbed the microphone out of Joe Rogan’s hands and called out Silva after his UFC 136 win over Brian Stann.

The fight makes sense both from a matchmaking and promotional stand point, so it seems likely that this fight will take place in the first quarter of 2012.

Sonnen’s wrestling gave Silva fits during their first fight at UFC 117, and if it wasn’t for a 5th round triangle choke by Silva, Sonnen would likely be UFC champion right now.

It will be fun to see if Sonnen can try and replicate his success against Silva for another 5 rounds.
