BCS Rankings Week 10: 5 Teams Screwed in the USA Today Coaches' Poll
The BCS polls are influenced by three separate factors that are all unrelated.
The Harris Poll is based around former players, coaches and media and was created to replace the AP Poll when it decided it didn't want to be a part of the BCS rankings. The computer section is done by six different programs, with the middle four (each team's top and bottom ranking are dropped), influencing the final rankings.
The last third of the BCS equation is the USA Today Coaches' poll, based around multiple coaches who are chosen at random before the season starts who vote every week where teams should be. There are times when the coaches are dead on, and other times they're way off.
Sometimes, however, the coaches seem to be off the reservation. Teams of players are screwed by this poll, which can strongly affect their BCS standings.
Every week, we take a look back at the USA Today Coaches' Poll and who they screwed over this time.
Unranked Texas A&M
1 of 5Texas A&M has one of the most potent offenses in the nation. QB Ryan Tannehill and his offense can score on the ground or in the air easily and have displayed that in multiple games. All three of their losses have come by less than seven points, two of them to Top 10 teams.
That the Aggies dropped out of the rankings altogether is completely ridiculous. Missouri hasn't been super impressive this year, but they're somewhat strong in the Big 12, and losing in overtime to them was tough.
A&M was No. 16, and even though teams ranked above them lost, they still managed to fall completely out.
Ironically, the three losses Texas A&M does have are the exact same three the Aggies had at the end of last season. Missouri, Oklahoma State and Arkansas were all close games last season and remained the same this year.
A&M might not be in the race for a BCS bowl, but they still are in competition to end up in the Cotton or Alamo bowls.
No. 22 Cincinnati
2 of 5The Bearcats had a bye week this past Saturday and got screwed out of their Big East lead. Coming off an extremely disappointing loss to Syracuse, West Virginia edged out Rutgers yesterday. This led to them jumping Cincy to No. 21.
Cincinnati may not have played yesterday, but losing their Big East lead to a team that just recently lost to the Orange is disgraceful.
The Coaches' Poll really lost sight of how good the Bearcats are, and overlooked their big victories over South Florida and Louisville.
No. 20 Georgia
3 of 5Georgia pulled off a big win yesterday over the Florida Gators, finishing the game 24-20. They now have completed a six-game win streak, five of which are against SEC teams.
The Bulldogs are being overlooked by the rest of the coaches. Their team is much stronger than we anticipated after seeing them lose consecutively to Boise State and South Carolina.
Well, now both of those teams are in the Top 10 and Georgia is sitting way down at No. 20.
With a game next week against New Mexico State, the Bulldogs should extend their winning streak to seven and might finish out the regular season with victories as they face Auburn, Kentucky and Georgia Tech in their final three games.
No. 19 Kansas State
4 of 5The Wildcats were an undefeated team until yesterday, losing badly to an impressive Oklahoma squad.
Now KSU has dropped from No. 12 to No. 19 after losing to No. 7 OU. A loss to a high-powered team like the Sooners should not cause such a drop.
K-State is a good team that deserves more respect from the Coaches' Poll. Bill Snyder has transformed this team into a power that can once again change the landscape of college football. As they go into Oklahoma State next week, watch out for a possible upset.
No. 14 Houston
5 of 5Houston is once again an undefeated team. They are better than just the Top 15.
The coaches are once again making a mistake leaving out another non-AQ team. This is how Boise State started, and until they surprise some big time team in some BCS bowl, the Cougars will get no respect.
In my book, undefeated means undefeated, especially this late in the season. Going undefeated in any sport is extremely tough, but in a game like football, it's is even tougher due to the high amounts of injuries, physical contact and mental fallouts.
