UFC 137 Results: Hatsu Hioki and the Top 10 Featherweights in the UFC
On Saturday night, Hatsu Hioki made his long-awaited debut in the UFC.
Although he was underwhelming, Hioki was still able to pull out the split-decision victory over the seasoned veteran George Roop.
Also on the preliminary card, Tyson Griffin faced off against UFC newcomer Bart Palaszewski, and Palaszewski scored the upset by finishing Griffin in the first round.
This will surely shake up the featherweight rankings.
No. 10: George Roop
1 of 10George Roop has been a bit inconsistent as of late, but it has still been good enough to keep him in the top 10.
In his last five fights at featherweight, he is 3-2-1, with the losses coming to Mark Hominick via TKO and Hatsu Hioki via split decision, and the draw was a split draw with Leonard Garcia after Roop had a point deducted.
If Roop had been finished by Hioki, he likely would have fallen out of the top 10 altogether.
Roop has notable victories over Josh Grispi and Chan Sung Jung.
No. 9: Bart Palaszewski
2 of 10With his first round stoppage of Tyson Griffin on Saturday night, Palaszewski bumps Griffin out of the top 10 and takes his place.
Bart Palaszewski is a veteran of a whopping 50 professional MMA fights, and he has a record of 36-14, including a 5-3 record in the UFC and WEC.
Palaszewski was quite the underdog coming into this fight, but he was able to hand Griffin his second ever stoppage via strikes.
Look for Palaszewski to make a name for himself in the future.
No. 8: Diego Nunes
3 of 10Diego Nunes is one of the best strikers in the featherweight division.
Nunes is 5-2 in his UFC/WEC career, and his only losses have been unanimous decisions to LC Davis and Kenny Florian—nothing to be ashamed of.
Nunes has notable victories over Mike Brown and Raphael Assunção.
No. 7: Dustin Poirier
4 of 10Dustin Poirier has had a big year. First, he upset Josh Grispi at UFC 125, then he won a unanimous decision over Jason Young at UFC 131. Now he gets to fight at the UFC's debut card on Fox against Pablo Garza.
Poirier is 10-1 in his career and is 2-0 in the featherweight division.
He has notable victories over Josh Grispi and Zach Micklewright.
His next fight will be against Pablo Garza at UFC on Fox 1.
No. 6: Erik Koch
5 of 10Erik Koch is quickly becoming a huge threat in the featherweight division.
He is currently riding a four-fight winning streak, including victories over Raphael Assuncao and Jonathan Brookins.
His only career loss came to the current No. 1 contender, Chad Mendes.
Koch has notable victories over Jonathan Brookins and Raphael Assuncao.
No. 5: Kenny Florian
6 of 10Kenny Florian is the former, two-time lightweight title challenger and a one-time featherweight title challenger.
He fell short in every fight.
Florian may never get another shot at a UFC title, and he will go down in history as one of the best fighters to never wear UFC gold.
Florian has notable victories over Diego Nunes, Takanori Gomi, Clay Guida, Joe Stevenson, Roger Huerta and Joe Lauzon.
Additionally, Florian did announce he will return to the lightweight division, so he will likely not be ranked in featherweight for much longer.
No. 4: Mark Hominick
7 of 10Mark "The Machine" Hominick put up the best fight that anyone has against Aldo, as he was able to arguably win two rounds from Aldo.
Hominick was on a five-win streak, with four finishes, before the fight with Aldo, so when he fights again, look for him to come back gunning for another title shot.
Hominick has notable victories over George Roop, Leonard Garcia, Bryan Caraway and Yves Edwards.
No. 3: Hatsu Hioki
8 of 10Yes, Hioki has only had one UFC fight, and it was an underwhelming performance. And you can make your jokes, Mr. Jokey Joke-Maker, but let me hit you with some knowledge.
Hatsu Hioki holds two victories—that's right, two over No. 4 on the list Mark Hominick.
Additionally, both of those fights took place in Canada, where Hominick is from.
Hioki came over to divide the men from the boys and the feminine from the possibly Canadian.
No. 2: Chad Mendes
9 of 10Chad Mendes is the current No. 2 featherweight in the world and the current No. 1 contender to Jose Aldo's title.
Mendes is a perfect 11-0 in his MMA career and is ready for his title shot against Aldo.
Mendes has notable victories over Rani Yahya, Michihiro Omigawa, Cub Swanson and Erik Koch.
No. 1: Jose Aldo
10 of 10No real surprise with the No. 1 here.
Aldo is on a 13-fight win streak, 10 fights in the UFC/WEC, and is known as one of the most explosive fighters in the game today.
Aldo won the title at WEC 44 by defeating Mike Brown, and he hasn't looked back since.
Aldo has notable victories over Jonathan Brookins, Cub Swanson, Mike Brown, Manny Gamburyan, Urijah Faber, Mark Hominick and Kenny Florian.
