UFC 137 Results: Critiquing Nick Diaz's Performance Against BJ Penn

Matt SaccaroOct 30, 2011

Nick Diaz wowed fans and proved his abilities against B.J. Penn at UFC 137, but don't tell him that!

Diaz was unimpressed with what he did in the fight, and he made it known at the UFC 137 post fight press conference.

"I thought I put on a poor performance...I didn't fight a smart fight," he said despite using an array of devastating combinations and body shots to beat up Penn in a way that the Hawaiian has never been beat up before.

Is there truth to Diaz's discontentment or is he blowing smoke?

Diaz looked good against Penn, but just good. While he deserves to be happy with the win, he still needs to work on some parts of his MMA game, namely his striking defense and his wrestling.

Diaz took many shots (some of them on purpose, so he claims) in the first round. If he was fighting a competitor that didn't have stamina issues, he would've taken many more punches throughout the fight.

However, perhaps it was due to Diaz's training problems. "My timing was really off," he said.

"I didn't get the right type of training that I was needing. I didn't spend enough time working with my trainer like I should have."

Still, his striking offense was brilliant. His enigmatic boxing is strong and he strings combinations together better than any other fighter at welterweight. He has mastered body shots like no other man in MMA.

What Diaz really needs to be concerned with is his wrestling. Penn got a very easy takedown on him in the first round. He likely could've gotten more if he hadn't exhausted from the body shots and the frantic pace set by Diaz.

Diaz has always struggled against wrestlers.

Instead of learning to defend the takedown or get back up, he decided to just not fight wrestlers. He hasn't fought a prominent wrestler since Sean Sherk in 2006.

What will happen if he fought the best wrestler at welterweight (and one of the best wrestlers in MMA), Georges St.Pierre? Judging by what he showed us at UFC 137, he'd get taken down and beaten on.

Nick Diaz did well, but not too well. If the Nick Diaz that showed up at UFC 137 fights St.Pierre in February, Diaz will lose.
