BCS Rankings: Oklahoma State & 4 Teams That Can Break the SEC's BCS Title Streak

Austin PorterOct 29, 2011

SEC supporters will lead you to believe that there is no way a non-SEC representative can win the BCS Championship.

Well, they are wrong.

Yes, the Southeastern Conference has won the last five national titles.

However, there are four teams that CAN overtake the SEC's stranglehold on the crystal football. These teams will compete in talent level and coaching prowess.

It is select company, mind you. Only those teams that are undefeated likely have a shot at making the title game itself.

Ready for some firepower non-SEC fans? Here you go.

Oklahoma State Cowboys

1 of 4

Oklahoma State is the front-runner to overtake any SEC representative in the title game.

If there's one question about the Cowboys' prospects at an undefeated season, it is their defense. Oklahoma State was allowing 26.9 points per game coming into today's action.

Oklahoma State beat a high-powered Baylor offense 59-24, thus demonstrating Mike Gundy's team is capable of buckling down when needed on defense.

Moreover, the offenses of LSU or Alabama do not rival those of weekly Big 12 competition.

Everyone knows about the high-octane offense. The Cowboys have weapons in Brandon Weeden, Joseph Randle and Justin Blackmon who can move the football against the best of SEC defenses.

As long as the Cowboys can get through the rival matchup with the Sooners, look for the Cowboys to step up to the plate against any SEC foe.

Stanford Cardinal

2 of 4

The breaking point between the majority of college football teams and SEC heavyweights is speed on defense, particularly up front.

Stanford has the talent to neutralize that advantage.

The left side of the Stanford offensive line will be selected in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Left tackle Jonathan Martin and guard David DeCastro will be able to protect quarterback Andrew Luck and give him time to pick apart the defense.

Yes, both LSU and Alabama have superior secondaries. But, no receiver is able to be covered for extended amounts of time, especially with a future NFL star behind center.

The Cardinal also have the ability to play SEC-style ball. The running game behind Stepfan Taylor is very physical. Any overlooking of Stanford's power game, or talent level, is done at the opposing team's expense.

You have been warned, SEC supporters.

Boise State Broncos

3 of 4

If there is one team that can put together the perfect game plan given weeks to prepare, it is Boise State.

Even if its talent is vastly inferior.

Given a long time to prepare in recent years, the Broncos have defeated Oregon, Virginia Tech, Georgia and Oklahoma. With the extended time to prepare for a National Championship game, coach Chris Petersen can draw up some trick plays and schemes good enough to confuse an SEC defense.

As I mentioned before, SEC offenses can be had. Both quarterbacks for LSU and Alabama leave something to be desired. Thus, Boise State can win without scoring upwards of 30 points.

Quarterback Kellen Moore is one of the most accurate signal callers in college football. He can read defenses, and knows how to win.

Given the chance, Moore could lead his Broncos to a win against the SEC's best.

Clemson Tigers

4 of 4

The Clemson Tigers have a legitimate chance to defeat an SEC team in the National Championship game.

Disagree? Consider this.

The 2010 Clemson Tigers went into overtime with the eventual National Champion Auburn Tigers. At Auburn.

Does anyone want to argue that Clemson is worse in 2011 than in 2010? I didn't think so.

Breakout star Tajh Boyd is surrounded by electric playmakers all over the field. He has a freshman receiver in Sammy Watkins that NFL scouts are drooling over already. Boyd also has a go-to tight end in Dwayne Jones that will be an early-round selection in the 2012 NFL Draft.

In a recent telecast, Urban Meyer compared Clemson's offense to his former Florida National Championship team. Boyd distributes the ball like Tim Tebow. Watkins is the Tigers' version of Percy Harvin. Dwayne Allen is the athletic tight end akin to Aaron Hernandez.

The Tigers are closer to an SEC team than one might think. If they go undefeated, they can win a championship like one, too.
