BCS Standings: Boise State and More Overhyped Teams Exposed in Week 8
Following the initial release of the BCS standings last week, every game will play a major role in how the teams get ranked at season's end.
While some higher-profile teams fell in Week 8, here are three teams that didn't help themselves with their performances on Saturday.
Arkansas Razorbacks
Arkansas was ranked ninth in the first BCS rankings, but picked up a shaky win over Mississippi on Saturday. That won't help them with the voters, especially when you consider the big wins by teams like Kansas State and Oregon, which are in the same ranking vicinity.
They still have games with South Carolina and LSU left on the schedule, so BCS hope is far from lost, but they'll need to play a lot better in those games than they did against Ole Miss. Look for a far more impressive triumph against Vanderbilt next weekend.
Projected BCS Ranking: 11
Auburn Tigers
It's been an up-and-down season for Auburn. The Tigers picked up their third loss of the season in blowout fashion against top-ranked LSU. Their defense had no answer for LSU's multidimensional offensive attack and proved they are only a fringe Top 25 team.
There was still some hope in Baton Rouge that Auburn could jump start a late season dash for the BCS with a win over the (other) Tigers, but it didn't happen. They are now out of contention for a major bowl and are fighting for positioning in other games.
Projected BCS Ranking: 25
Boise State Broncos
The Broncos find themselves in this position every season and can't seem to find their way out of it. They can't get high-profile schools to schedule them for non-conference battles and their in-conference games aren't enough to push them over the top.
A close home win over Air Force won't help them in the eyes of voters, who are likely skeptical in the first place. Boise's opening week win over Georgia looks less impressive now and will probably be its only win over a ranked team prior to a bowl game.
Projected BCS Ranking: 5
