6 Major Leaguers We Desperately Need on Twitter
Today, it seems as though everyone is on Twitter. From everyday people to A-list celebrities, the social networking site has taken the world by storm, and even people who aren't members read some people's postings, or "tweets," on a daily basis.
In the baseball world, a well-known Twitter account belongs to Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Nyjer Morgan or, as he likes to be called, Tony Plush. Morgan's profile, @TheRealTPlush, is one of the most popular, as nearly 67,000 people follow the emotional and often hilarious player.
Yet, there are some players that are hilarious, emotional (sometimes both) and extremely popular with the fans that aren't on Twitter. Here are six we wish were regular tweeters.
Honorable Mention: Manny Ramirez
1 of 7OK, so maybe I'm cheating by including a retired player, let alone an honorable mention before starting the top six. Yet, it's impossible to not include Manny Ramirez on this list.
Throughout his career, fans have had to deal with episodes of "Manny Being Manny." The guy was not only a great player, but easily one of the game's biggest head cases. Were he on Twitter, we'd probably read about everything from in-clubhouse fighting to disputes with team management to what he's thinking during games.
Keep in mind, this is a man who went inside the Green Monster during a game and made a call from his cell phone. Who's to say he wouldn't jump on the mobile version of Twitter and tweet during a game?
No. 6: Zack Greinke
2 of 7Now, let me just start by saying that I am not looking to make fun of Zack Greinke in saying this. The man has a well-documented history of struggles with social anxiety disorder and it sometimes gets to him during games.
That being said, I think having Greinke on Twitter would be extremely interesting. So many people close to me have struggled with anxiety and I've always wondered what goes through their minds.
If he had an account, perhaps Greinke would give us a look into his mind after both bad and good starts so we could have an idea of what he's thinking out on the mound. Pitchers make an art out of looking stoic during games, and given how Greinke went from a Cy Young-winning stopper to an inconsistent arm almost overnight, I would love to see how he deals with his fans in the cyberworld.
No. 5: Vladimir Guerrero
3 of 7Long considered to be one of the most blue-collar players in baseball history, Big Bad Vlad is a player I'm honestly shocked is not on Twitter. Here is a man who has never worn batting gloves, once swung at an intentional ball and also had an absolute cannon for an arm.
His teammates love him and he is surely a future Hall of Famer, but his enthusiastic attitude is what makes him a prime candidate for Twitter. Two seasons ago, playing for the Texas Rangers, his dreadlocks bouncing up and down as he had a Cheshire Cat-like grin on his face all the time could have made for some killer Tweets.
One can only hope that he joins as his career winds down.
No. 4: Tim Lincecum
4 of 7Teammate Brian Wilson may already hold the Twitter crown in the clubhouse, but Tim Lincecum would be a great player to have on Twitter. First, the fact that he is nicknamed "The Freak" could make for a great site username (Tim_Freak, TheFreakSFGiants).
On top of that, Lincecum is such a renaissance man that his Twitter would be so diverse and fun. He'd surely provide some great photos for San Francisco night life, and let's not forget the man loves Frank Sinatra. How awesome would it be, around Halloween time, to see a picture of him dressed as Ol' Blue Eyes?
No. 3: Jonathan Papelbon
5 of 7As a Yankees fan, I automatically think Jonathan Papelbon is a psychopath. The man has the crazy eyes going on, and as much as I hate the Red Sox, this isn't a guy I would want to mercilessly trash talk. To be completely honest, if he weren't playing baseball, I'd expect him to be in a maximum security prison making some smaller prisoner his...OK, I'm getting carried away.
Either way, Papelbon is one of the most intense players in baseball and his being on Twitter would be online social media gold. Just imagine the stuff he could post following an awful blown save or an ejection. Knowing him, he'd go completely bonkers and say something that might get him fined.
Then again, Twitter needs its comical athletes too, so Papelbon could be a good fit despite the fact that some of us may have nightmares about him.
No. 2: Johnny Damon
6 of 7The fact that Johnny Damon is not already on Twitter is just ridiculous. His good friend and ex-teammate Nick Swisher has well over a million followers on the site, so I naturally assumed these guys followed each other, tweeted and re-tweeted each other, etc.
Yet, the man who was so popular with both the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox and has such an explosive personality, the fact that he isn't on Twitter is just, well, shocking. Simply put, "Johnny Nitro" needs to catch up with the younger guys (sorry, Johnny) and get on the site.
Considering how everyone loves him and he's a fun-loving dude, he practically owes it to us.
No. 1: Brett Myers
7 of 7You know what? Words cannot do justice to the reasons hardcore prankster Brett Myers belongs on Twitter. Just watch the video and the reasons will come flying.
