David Garrard Raiders: Former Jaguars QB to Oakland Is Match Made in Heaven

Matt FaulconerOct 17, 2011

David Garrard and the Oakland Raiders must come to an agreement.

The Raiders are 4-2 and have a legitimate shot of reaching the playoffs, but they need a QB not named Kyle Boller in order to be successful. Jason Campbell went down with a collarbone injury and will be out indefinitely, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, which all but means the rest of the season.

It's nearly impossible to find a starting caliber QB in free agency at this point in the season, but Garrard is still available, and thus welcoming the Raiders to make him a big offer. According to Schefter, the Raiders have already initiated contact with the former Jaguars QB.

Garrard's agent has also informed Terry McCormick of National Football Post that the QB could head to Oakland for a workout.

All of this is certainly good news for Raiders fans.

While Garrard is smaller than Campbell, he has a big arm, and is also relatively mobile.

Garrard would be the ideal fit in Oakland. The offense that he ran in Jacksonville is relatively similar to the offense that he would run in Oakland with the Raiders.

Both offenses place a heavy emphasis on the play action pass, and both offenses prefer to dominate with the run game rather than the passing game. They both like to take some downfield shots, and Garrard will love have a speedy receiving corps rather than the likes of Mike Thomas and Mike Sims-Walker.

Garrard is coming off a solid season that saw him throw for over 2,700 yards in 14 games, while also achieving a QB rating of 90.8.

The Raiders don't have any other options at this point.

They can roll the dice with Kyle Boller, but they might end up with a couple of Rex Grossman-esque performances. Does anyone really want to deal with that?

The only other option the Raiders have is to get in touch with the Cincinnati Bengals in an attempt to bring in Carson Palmer. However, the Bengals are highly unlikely to trade the disgruntled QB, as they have refused to listen to trade offers all year.

Getting a deal done is essential for Oakland, and they need to do it in a hurry. The faster they can get Garrard under contract, the faster he can learn the offense.

This should be a no-brainer for the Raiders.
