College Football: Why the BCS Is Sweating Bullets over What Could Happen in 2011

Larry BurtonOct 27, 2011

Larry Burton (Syndicated Writer)- Fortunately for the BCS the Alabama-LSU game will knock off one undefeated team and Kansas State-Oklahoma State will knock off another, but there could still be way too many undefeated teams come January and that could mean that a few teams will screaming "Foul" very loudly if that is the case.

And therein lies the problem.

Let's discuss the realities of the problem.

Should Stanford be undefeated, along with Oklahoma State or Kansas State, Clemson, Boise State and Houston, then each of them will feel that they should be the one to play the undefeated SEC champion for the BCS title, but only one of them will.

Should each win out, the BCS computer will have Oklahoma State or Kansas State the second highest rated team and that starts all the belly aching.

Boise State will say that they have the year-in and year-out record to be there and they are just clearly being snubbed each year and there is no fairness.

And that argument does have merit.

Stanford will argue from the strength of schedule stance and after beating Oregon, Arizona State and a good USC team despite restrictions, that argument does have some merit.

Clemson will argue that they are the true Cinderella team of the 2011 season and could best matchup with Alabama in a head-to-head contest and except for Houston, nobody has come farther up from the bottom to be undefeated.

And that argument does have some merit.

Houston will simply argue, hey, we are undefeated too. No prognosticator in the country had them on the radar for even a Top 25 ranking and here they are undefeated and are the hottest team going right now.

And while it doesn't carry a lot of weight, it is a defensible argument.

And should either Alabama or LSU lose by just a point or two, they could argue that the best two teams in the nation are these two teams.

And that would also have a lot of merit.

What a mess for the BCS.
