BCS Rankings 2011: Each AP Poll Team's Odds of Winning the National Title
With the 2011 BCS rankings set to be released tonight, everyone is looking to see which teams will be playing for the national championship in January.
At this point in the season, there are still 10 undefeated teams remaining. This could allow 2011 to be a season where proponents of the playoff system have their strongest argument yet.
Regardless of public opinion, only two teams will be able to compete in the BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans. Luckily, there is plenty football left to show which teams can emerge as the best.
1. LSU (6-1)
They are the top team in the country, but a trip to Alabama in three weeks could ruin their title hopes.
2. Alabama (5-1)
A battle with LSU, plus the always tough SEC Championship Game are in the way of Alabama and another appearance in the title game.
3. Oklahoma (4-1)
A tough game with rival Oklahoma State should be the only thing that stands in the way of Bob Stoops going to another BCS Championship Game.
4. Wisconsin (6-1)
Russell Wilson might win the Heisman Trophy, but the Badgers might not be high enough in the rankings to play for the championship.
5. Boise State (10-1)
Boise State looks like it will go undefeated yet again, but there will be too many major-conference teams in the way. Maybe when the Broncos are in the Big East they will have a different fortune.
6. Oklahoma State (8-1)
They host Oklahoma on the last game of the season. A win could be enough for the Cowboys to leap frog some teams to the important No. 2 spot.
7. Stanford (10-1)
Stanford has a very good football team, but there are too many schools in front of them in the standings for them to be contenders.
8. Clemson (15-1)
The Tigers survived an upset scare at Maryland this weekend, but the team showed its vulnerability and will most likely stumble at some point this season.
9. Oregon (25-1)
Even if they beat Stanford, Oregon will not be able to overcome the Week 1 loss to LSU.
10. Arkansas (20-1)
If Arkansas wins out and LSU defeats Alabama, there would be a three-way tie for the SEC West lead. At that point, the BCS rankings might come into play, giving Arkansas an outside chance to pass them all.
11. West Virginia (40-1)
The Mountaineers returned to form this year, but one-loss teams in the Big East usually do not go very far in the BCS rankings.
12. Kansas State (20-1)
The least-talked about undefeated team has a rough schedule ahead, but until they lose, anything is possible.
13. Nebraska (30-1)
The defeat to Wisconsin might have knocked them out of the picture this year, but they will be back next season ready to go all the way.
14. South Carolina (45-1)
Losing Stephen Garcia and Marcus Lattimore for the season might be too much for this team to overcome.
15. Michigan State (35-1)
The Spartans made a statement last week by beating Michigan. Now the team will need to defeat Wisconsin to be taken seriously.
16. Virginia Tech (45-1)
The Hokies got embarrassed by Clemson at home, but do not be surprised when Virginia Tech still represents the ACC in the Orange Bowl for the fourth time in five years.
17. Texas A&M (60-1)
Texas A&M already has two losses this season, and the schedule does not get any easier from here with Oklahoma, Kansas State and Texas still to go.
18. Michigan (45-1)
The loss to Michigan State hurt, but the Wolverines are miles ahead of where the team was last year at this time.
19. Auburn (70-1)
Two losses put the defending champions on the outside looking in, but many expected the young team to be much worse this season.
20. Georgia Tech (60-1)
A major upset by Virginia is all Georgia Tech needed to keep the Yellow Jackets out of the championship discussion.
21. Houston (100-1)
Houston is a good story this year and is unappreciated as an undefeated team. Still, the Cougars will not see a title game until either Boise State or TCU does. Dues must be paid.
22. Washington (60-1)
Washington has a chance to turn some heads with games against Stanford and Oregon still to go. More likely, the Huskies will end up with three losses.
23. Illinois (60-1)
A home loss to Ohio State was devastating to a team trying to prove it was legitimate.
24. Georgia (75-1)
Georgia sealed its fate with two losses to start the season. Still, the future looks bright for the young team.
24. Arizona State (75-1)
Arizona State needed a win over Oregon to stay relevant, but the Ducks were just too much for the Sun Devils.
