BCS Rankings 2011: Why Oklahoma State Has Most Potent Offense of Any Top 10 Team
The Oklahoma State Cowboys are currently ranked No. 6 in the AP poll. Their lofty ranking is due in large part to their absolutely electric offense.
The Cowboys rank second in passing yards per game and second in points per game. Their rushing offense is ranked 55th in the nation in average yards per game.
Oklahoma State has scored 30 or more points in 11 straight games dating back to last season. Mike Gundy's team has not skipped a beat after losing offensive mastermind Dana Holgorsen to West Virginia in the offseason.
The Cowboys' air raid has maintained itself largely because of Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon. These two form, possibly, the top quarterback-wide receiver duo in the nation.
Weeden has put up over 2,000 yards so far this season and 16 touchdowns. Blackmon has seven of those touchdowns, along with 53 catches and 608 yards.
Even the greatest passing attacks must have a run game to keep opposing defenses honest.
Joseph Randle provides a quality compliment to the Cowboys' aerial assault. Randle has 484 yards rushing and eight touchdowns. His 5.2 yards per carry forces the defense to respect his ability to burn them if they grow too complacent.
Jeremy Smith provides an even bigger home-run threat out of the backfield. He averages almost seven yards per carry. In the Cowboys' Week 7 matchup against Texas, Smith had seven carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cowboys rely on their passing attack to score points, but their run game is good enough to hurt any team not willing to respect it.
Compared to other top teams, the Cowboys hold the edge offensively.
LSU is solid, but not an explosive football team. Alabama has the ground game but the passing attack isn't elite. Wisconsin and Boise State seem to have the complete package, but who have they played to prove it?
Oklahoma may provide the biggest offensive competition to their bitter in-state rival.
Luckily, that will be decided in the final week of the season when the two face off for a possible national championship berth.
The Cowboys' run game seems to develop as each week passes.
The idea of a prolific rushing attack to go with this incredible passing game is downright scary for anyone forced to play the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
